Comment: 50 YEARS??? Man, that was quick.

After I graduated, I went to work as a shipping clerk for Austin Bridge. I stayed there a couple of years before following my friend Judd James into the Telecommunications industry working for Contel. Who knew our drafting teacher Mr Cohen would have taught me the skills that would change the course of my life.

It was there I met my wife of 17 years and had to daughters. As a drafter, I learned how to interpret engineering drawings and later became a telecommunications engineer. After mergers and acquisitions within the telecommunications industry, I left what was now GTE to join MCI. After working as an engineer with them for a few years designing fiber optic networks, I set my sights on becoming a project manager. I left MCI and went to Fujitsu as a project manager. When that assignment ended, I accepted a position as Regional Director over (OSP) outside plant engineering and construction with AT&T Local. After a few years, that operation folded and put me back on the street. It was devastating, to say the least, and unfortunately, I turned two hard drugs. Specifically methamphetamine. It took control of my life and was the cause of my failed marriage and set off a chain reaction of bad events for about 10 years. It was my faith that saved me from ultimate destruction. Go God! I took myself away from all those involved in that lifestyle and never touched it again. But the damage was done. I had lost my family and was within a couple of months of losing my home. Once again, my faith kicked in, and after a little bit of legal assistance and God's help, I was able to get back into the communications industry. I had been out of work for 2 years because of a misdemeanor I had on my record. I took a junior project manager job to get back into working. From there, I worked my way to senior project manager. I left that company to go work for a 911 service provider and equipment manufacturer as a senior project manager. After a few years with them, they started laying off during covid, and I was affected. Of course, no one was hiring during that time, so I just decided to retire and finally do what I love to do. Make music. I started a little band and played around town for a few years until I started having heart problems. After a few surgeries and a pacemaker, I called it quits on performing with a band and now perform mainly solo gigs.

It's funny how things work out in life.

I'm very happy now with my girlfriend Elizabeth. I have patched up things with my ex-wife, and her and her husband come over and swim at my house every now and then.

I have fond memories of Sunset High School. Not only did I learn something there that helped me advance my careers, but I also met friends that I still stay in touch with occasionally.

I remember sitting out in a circle in the Pecan Grove, and I don't have to tell you what that means. LOL, but someone tapped me on the shoulder and said, "Look up at Miss Farmers class. That was a class I was skipping at that time. And just as I raised a joint to my mouth, I looked up and saw all the kids in my class hanging out the window yelling my name. Hey Ed! I wonder who was in that class with me? LOL, I told that person to tell Miss Farmer I would be up there shortly...

If you've taken the time to read all this, you have way too much time on your hands! LOL. May God bless you, and may happiness follow you the rest of your lives.

Gary Dyke

Marital status: Widowed
Children: 4
Occupation: Sales now retired
Comment: After high school, I embarked on a 12 year degree program as I got married, relatively young (20) and wound up going to college part time as I had a family to provide for. I spent many years in the manufacturing industry and ultimately held the title of VP of Manufacturing at a company in Dallas for 17 years. When it became evident that a career change was necessary, I had the opportunity to enter into the sales field, where I spent the rest of my career.

Married once for 14 years and ended that in divorce. Married the second time, to the love of my life, and lost her to cancer in 2006.

The joy of my life are my children and all have done well for themselves. All of the kiddos have exceeded my wildest expectations and are successful in their chosen field.

I retired December 31, 2023 and am trying to find out what this retirement stuff is all about.
