Occupation: Science writer (retired)
So, what have you been doing for the last 50 years?: After completing my education (B.A., St. Olaf College; Ph.D. in Chemistry, Harvard University), I got married and moved to Washington, D.C., where I worked for a year with the U.S. House of Representatives and then eight years with the American Chemical Society. Then, in 1991, it was time to return to the Midwest, and I’ve been living in the Twin Cities ever since. In Minnesota, I started a career as a freelance science writer and also assumed the primary parenting role for my four children. After my divorce in 1998, I met Jeanette, who has two children. After dating for 15 years (2000-2015), we finally got married.

Since retiring from science writing nearly two years ago, I’ve been enjoying a busy life and not regretting retirement for a moment. One focus in retirement has been volunteer work at the Minnesota Zen Meditation Center, where I’ve been teaching classes (“Introduction to Zen Meditation” and a six-week class on “Zen and Science”). Another significant activity, especially from May to October, is camping. My wife and I bought a pop-up camper three years ago, and we’re taking full advantage of our wonderful state and national park systems. In our combined family, we have six adult children (three living locally in the Twin Cities) and five granddaughters (four of them in the Twin Cities), so family also figures importantly in my life these days. Hobbies include singing in a church choir, occasionally playing my trombone in a brass group at church, reading (mostly mysteries and thrillers), and napping.
