Memories

Deeyah McClurkin

Sometimes, when I'm doing dishes and I rinse soap suds out of a bottle or jar, I remember Chemistry class with Mr. Hartman. I remember how he taught us that a small bit of water was better than a lot to rinse a beaker. And he was right! That memory often prompts another memory: the time we were to prepare an experiment and leave our beakers to react overnight. The next day Mr. Hartman emphatically told the class how important it was to follow directions exactly, as he’d found a container that was very hot that morning and said it could’ve caused a fire. Whoever had done it had forgotten to put their name on the label. I felt relieved no fire had started. And - confession time - I was also relieved that I had forgotten to put my name on it.
