Cory passed away March 12, 2019 of pneumonia at age 95.

Cory was born on December 27th, 1923 in Cook, MN to Cora (Howe) and Willis Beatty. Following her 1941 high school graduation, she attended two years of Virginia Jr. College and was employed by the Bridgeman Russell Headquarters in Virginia.

During WWII, Cory served in the WAVES, the women’s branch of the Navy, receiving training in Milledgeville at Georgia College of Women. After the war, Cory returned to Virginia to work for Oliver Mining. She met Edward “Buck” Hawkinson at a sledding party and they married in 1947. They were blessed with four children. BEAN, Karen of Saginaw, Michigan. Passed away Thursday, January 13, 2011 at Mercy Manor in Grayling, Michigan at the age of 75 years. Karen was born June 19, 1935 in Pontiac, Michigan, the daughter of the late James and Lucille (Anderson) Beatty. Karen married Ronald G. Bean August 10, 1957, and he predeceased her August 17, 1998. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Saginaw. Karen is survived by her children: Janet L. (Gregory) Lee, Grayling, MI, James R. (Valerie) Bean Beaverton, OR; Kenneth J. James Beatty

James Beatty, 68 years old, passed away at Saginaw General Hospital Friday, Sept. 11, 1970, after a lengthy illness. He was born February 7, 1902 in Tower, Minnesota, came to Saginaw in 1945, and had resided there since. He had been employed as a construction engineer by the Michigan State Highway Dept. for 32 years, retiring in 1965. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and served as an usher and deacon. Mr. Beatty was also a life member of Saginaw Lodge No. 77, F&AM, the Bay City Consistory and the Elf Khurafeh Temple AAONMS. He married Lucile Anderson of Duluth, Minnesota, on June 22, 1928. COOK- Willis N. Beatty, 63, long-time resident of Cook, died late last evening at the Virginia Municipal Hospital, where he had been since October 15. Born in Tower, he came to Cook with his parents in 1904, and had lived here ever since. Willis was a veteran of WW1, having served in France. He was employed by the St. Louis County Highway Department at the county garage in Cook.
Mr. Beatty was a member of the Tower Lodge 197, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons; The Daniels-Gustafson Post American Legion; and The Last Man's Club.
Surviving are his wife, Cora; two daughters, Cora Rae (Edward) Hawkinson of Virginia and Mary (Don) Schmidt of Ranchester, Wyo.;

Our grandmother, Margaret “Poppy” Beatty Heiam, was born in 1889, one of nine children of Lillian and James Beatty. Hard work, devotion to family and service to the community of Cook were the hallmarks of Poppy’s life. But her life was certainly without challenges.

Poppy grew up in Cook, Minnesota in a house in the country which is still (barely) standing today. Keeping body and soul together for a family of eleven required lots of hard work, but thankfully her parents and siblings excelled at hard work. Both parents worked the farm.
