Matthew Stephen Stjepcevich, 45, died suddenly while visiting friends in Cuidad Juarez, Mexico on July 17, 2001. A Memorial Mass will be said for him at 10:00 a.ni., Friday morning, July 27, 2001, at St. Mary's Basilica in Galveston, followed immediately by an interment service at the Columbarium at Trinity Episcopal Church, 2216 Ball, in Galveston. Father Jerry Lewis, assisted by Father Bob Wells, will say Mass. Father Wells will officiate at the Trinity Columbarium.

Born in Taylor, Texas on March 31,1956, to Joseph H. and Hildegarde Stjepcevich of Galveston. Matt attended Austin schools and was a graduate of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He was a former political consultant. At the time of his death, he was an owner of a restaurant and hotel in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Matt was a vigorous organic gardener, a fine cook, and loved to discuss politics and ideas. He loved Mexico and its people and felt most at home there. In his seven-year stay, he taught many people to speak English and conducted scores of informal demonstrations of soil amendment techniques, as well as mulching and composting.

Matthew is survived by his mother, Hildegarde Johns of Galveston; his aunt Vicki Johns Kane and her husband John of Galveston; Cathy Kane of Missouri City and her children, Mauricio Pons and Vicki Pons; Victoria Kane Toler and her husband Barney and their children, Kane and Ellis, of Leander; Joe Kane and his wife Mary and their children Mary Clelie and John of San Antonio; Jay Johns Kane and his wife Phyllis and their children Joshua, Meghan, and Erin of Austin. Matt is also survived by a paternal aunt Louise Stjepcevich Bauer of Port Lavaca and paternal cousins, Mary Louise and Phyllis Dorrough of Friendswood.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to: The William Temple Foundation, 427 Market, Galveston, TX 77550 or Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic School in Port Lavaca, Texas.
