Richard Maynard

Richard J. Maynard, 65, died peacefully on Saturday, Aug. 18, 2012, after a brief illness.
He was born in Norwalk, Conn., on Sept. 4, 1946, the son of Herbert and Lottie (Stanchi) Maynard. Richard was a proud graduate of Manchester Memorial High School, class of 1964. He earned a bachelor's degree in music education in 1969 from West Virginia University, a master's degree in music education in 1973 from the University of Illinois, and a master's degree in school administration in 1981 from the University of New Hampshire.
Richard began his distinguished teaching career in 1969 at Merrimack High School as director of music. In 1975, he became the award-winning director of choirs at Manchester High School West, where he taught until he retired in 2004 after 35 years of dedicated teaching and directing. His former students grace the stages of the world and many are today's young music educators in this area.
Richard was a founder of the New Hampshire All State Jazz Festival in 1983. His jazz choirs toured Germany, Austria, and France in 1990 and 1997, and performed in Las Vegas in 1993. He was named Teacher of the Year at Manchester High School West in 1999, and he was named the New Hampshire Music Educator of the Year in 2004. Richard was employed by the University of New Hampshire as a supervisor of student teachers in music education until this May. He also served as a vocal jazz clinician, an adjudicator, and as a guest conductor. He was a member of the Music Educators National Conference, the International Association of Jazz Educators, and also was a life member of Phi Mu Alpha, a music honorary society. He was a lifelong music enthusiast and enjoyed playing tenor sax with various ensembles, most recently with The Freese Brothers' Big Band and the Amoskeag Strummers.
Richard is survived by his wife, Muriel (Barrette) Maynard, of Manchester; two sons, David S. Maynard and Michael C. Maynard, both of New York, N.Y.; two stepsons, Jeffrey A. Dionne and his wife, Judith, of Candia; and Kenneth R. Dionne and his wife, Margaret, of Windham; four grandchildren, Jordan, Colby, Madison, and Jacob Dionne; and two cousins James Lanoie and his wife, Janina, of Candia and Barbara (Lanoie) Kearney and her husband, Paul, of Manchester.
