James T. Lennon

James Thomas Lennon of Grand Rapids passed away peacefully on June 21 at Breton Woods Centre. Jim was born on March 27, 1957, in Grand Rapids. He was the fourth of seven children from Donald E. and Frances (Schmidt) Lennon.

Jim graduated from Catholic Central in 1975 and shortly after high school he started a long

career at Steelcase. Jim had numerous hobbies and was a serious collector of coins and Star Wars and Star Trek memorabilia. He loved going to movies with family and friends and always looked forward to the Schmidt and Lennon family reunions where he held court by telling jokes and showcasing his mastery of trivia. From grade school on, Jim’s main source of education was The World Book Encyclopedia’s which he seemed to memorize. Everyone wanted Jim on their team when playing Trivial Pursuit.

Jim was a major help to his parents in their later years. He came by daily, did the shopping, ran errands, and helped with meals. Jim and his sister Lisa were very close and had a unique bickering but loving relationship that lasted for over 50 years. Watching the two of them together was like reliving an old comedy routine. It still makes us smile.

Jim is fondly remembered by his siblings, relatives, and friends for his humor and generosity. Jim never forgot a birthday and you could count on a funny card and a check. He was definitely a big teddy bear, and his nieces and nephews said that hugging him was like climbing a mountain.

The family would like to thank the staff at Breton Woods Rehabilitation Centre for taking such good care of Jim. We also send accolades to Faith Hospice for the great job they did communicating with our family and keeping Jim comfortable and cared for to the end.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and younger sister Lisa Beth. He is survived by his sisters Katie Lennon Tuttle, Patricia Peck (Don), Jean McNally (John) and his brothers John (Christy), and Joe Lennon.

A celebration of life will be held TBD.
