A father and three small sons in one car and three teenagers in another were killed in a mangling broadside collision Sunday afternoon on rain-slickened U.S. 91 in Layton.

The seven-death crash occurred at 3:59 p.m. as a northbound car carrying the three teenagers apparently attempted a left turn onto Gary Street. The vehicle, driven by William Bach, was hit broadside by the northbound station wagon driven by the father of the Del Rio family.

Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Gary Lucas said it was virtually impossible to tell exactly how the accident happened. "There were no skid marks and the highway was wet from a light rain." He said one car looked as if it had "exploded."
