Tom Guthrie passed away on Friday, January 3, 2020 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, January 8 at St. Anthony Catholic Church with burial at Glendale Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, at Tonini Funeral Home with the Rosary recited at 7.
Tom was born to William and Ida Guthrie on August 2nd, 1960 in Des Moines, Iowa. He was born and raised a south sider and was a star baseball player in his youth. He boasted a streak of perfect attendance, never missing a single day of school in elementary, middle school, high school and college. He grew up in an era where kids played outside all day riding bikes, playing baseball and hide and seek. He remained extremely close friends with many of his childhood pals.
Tom graduated from Lincoln High School and went on to Iowa State University, earning a degree in business management. At ISU, he blended academics with a great social life while building life-long friendships living in the dorms in Haber House.
After college, he worked many years at American Republic Insurance in the claims department. He was a devoted employee, worked hard and loved to save his money. Later he joined ARAG in Des Moines and worked as a Senior Claims Specialist.
Tom was a very likeable person who was always there for you if you needed something. He was funny and generous. Tom loved fitness, walking several miles every day – rain or shine. He never missed attending family Sunday lunch and always loved Mom’s lasagna. He was an avid Iowa State sports fan. He and his friends passionately watched or attended almost every game. He was not against an occasional bet on a horse and loved to play craps. Tom loved The Simpsons, Seinfeld and The Andy Griffith Show and could mimic many lines on command.
He often attended sporting events of his friends’ children and was always cheering in the stands or following online. He was a great son, sibling, uncle and a true friend.
Tom is survived by his mother, Ida Guthrie; siblings: Mary (Jesse) Gallardo, Gary Guthrie, and Michael Guthrie; and nieces, Kira Barker and Gabriella Guthrie.
