We are a group of people who live and/or work in Renton. We care greatly about building a sustainable community — one that fosters connections between people, protects natural resources, and treads as lightly as possible on the Earth.
We currently focus our efforts on issues around food justice and zero waste: Our Free Grocery Store, Sustainable Renton Community Farm, and Sustainable Talks all focus on food equity and education on how to create a healthier community and planet.
Every Monday from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm at St. Matthews Lutheran Church (1700 Edmonds Ave NE, Renton, WA), we distribute gleaned and donated produce boxes to hundreds of families in over 100 cars, most of whom are Renton residents. Since beginning operations in 2020, we have successfully handed out over 1,000,000 pounds of food.
Collection
We collect food from a number of area grocery stores, food pantries, local gardens, and government programs. Most of the food we collect is food that would have been wasted due to grocery stores overbuying or miscalculating supply and demand.
Distribution
We are able to accommodate drive-thru and walk-up patrons. Every week, we distribute bread, pastries, fresh produce, deli items, dry goods, meat, and personal hygiene products. Any and all are welcome to receive free food as long as there remains food to give away.
Volunteering
Each week the store is set up, operated, and torn down by 50-75 dedicated volunteers. We are always looking for help on Mondays anytime between the hours of 1:00 pm and 8:00 pm.
Working with community members and inspired by regional models such as 21 Acres, Marra Farms, Beacon Food Forest, and Seattle Community Farm, Sustainable Renton began in 2012 an ongoing discussion and exploration into the idea of developing a community farm in Renton.
We had our first group planning meeting on this idea in June 2012 and came up with a basic start plan to get rolling. We began doing research, connecting further with the community, and continuing to encourage community members to become involved and share their time, energy, and skills with this project.
Location
Behind Celebration Foursquare Church (11840 148th Ave SE Renton, WA), plots are available for community members to use all year round. The size of each plot is 20′x10′. Renters in good standing can renew the rental annually and we offer affordable rates, payment plans, sliding scales, and paid scholarships.
Work parties are scheduled throughout the year. We are always in need of extra hands to keep up with the constant tasks that need attending. This is a great chance to come and meet the farmers and get your hands dirty. Work parties will be scheduled on our calendar so keep an eye out for new events!
