Classmates Now

The year was 1962.  Jack and Jackie were in the White House, Elvis and Lawrence Welk were vying for supremacy on the radio.  Kids were doing the twist. We know where you were, 1201 S. Warson Road.  The question is where are you now and where will you be October 14 and 15, 2017?  Here's the spot to blow your own horn.  Tell us some of what's happened since you last updated your profile.  Not too much.  Don't be intimidated.  If you can't think of anything you can always make it up.  Who's to know!  Just let us hear from you.  Those of you who didn't create a profile for our 50th -- please do.

Like you, I am looking forward to getting reacquainted with old friends and perhaps make some new “old” friends. I have been living in Atlanta since 1980 – how time flies when you are having fun!

In any case, after the death of my childhood sweetheart and husband, Millard, our families thought I should move back to St. Louis. Well I’m still here after 37+ years.  I have 2 daughters and now have 5 grandchildren who also live in the Atlanta area.

I retired in March of this year.  Love it!!  I don't know why it took me so long.  Still love to dance, boat, read, walk/hike/travel, learning to play pickleball and mah jongg, etc.  Got back from 30 days in Southeast Asia in July 2017.  Visited 8 countries and 11 citires, including going up to The Great Wall, Beijing.   Not much time to rest.

See you in a month………

My email address was posted incorrectly in our 50th Reunion Address Book.  It is dbhoffman@bellsouth.net.  Hopefully it's been corrected in this year's book.  Don't hesitate to look me up if your down my way.

Elizabeth Hoffman (Pillsbury)

Comment:  I am still in St.Louis but my husband and I spend a god part of the winter in Venice,Fl. We have started working our way through our "bucket list". Our first venture, a trip to Costa Rica which included zip-lining and canyoning, was great fun. When I am home, I am involved in teaching in an ESL program, quilting, gardening, and boating on the Mississippi.

Oh, what a past half century it has been!!!  After college, law school and the military with assignments first in Louisiana and then Vietnam, it was back to St. Louis in 1971, and the pursuit of my career.  After having turned down two law firm offers, one in St. Louis and the other in Alexandria, Virginia, I decided to join my two brothers in the family business.  Over a period of time we expanded our operations to include 6 separate companies with business in five states.  In 1984 we sold the businesses, my brothers retired, and I was ready for something new and different.

After a few year as, believe it or not the Executive Director of the second largest Jewish synagogue in the city, I decided to move to South Florida.  It was there that I began investing in real estate and in the stock and bond markets aggressively.  This endeavor turned out quite well.

Then in 2009 after having endured 10 hurricanes over the years, I came to the conclusion that maybe snowflakes are not so bad after all, and moved back to good ‘ol St. Louis.  My roots are here, and it is good to be “home”.

I have done a lot of traveling, and since 2000 have visited 71 countries.  To see and experience other cultures is, as they say, priceless, not to mention meeting and keeping in touch with many wonderful people along the way.

So, all in all reflecting back, life has been good, including many fond memories of Ladue High School, and that has taught me that even though life can have its ups and downs, perseverance and hard work can pay off.  Treat others as you want to be treated.  Always help others at every opportunity.  Remember those classmates that are no longer with us.  After all, life is life and you make of it what you want.  Happy 50th everyone!!!

Sincerely,

Barry M. Hollander

Comment: After serving in Viet Nam, I returned to St. Louis.  My wife's name is Karen.  We've been married for 42 years and have 4 children, all of whom are gainfully employed. The bulk of my career was in healthcare. I spent 13 years at St. Mary's Health Center as Controller and another 21 years at Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mt. Vernon, Illinois as VP of Finance.  Both hospitals are owned by the SSM Healthcare System.  From 1989 to 2001, Karen and I owned a camp ground called Camp Zoe on the Current River.  Those were great summers for myself and my family.  After I retired, I bought a second home on Kentucky Lake. It is a great place to visit and visitors are welcome.
