Fred Levine was without a doubt one of the smartest guys in a high school full of ultra-smart people! I was in absolute awe of his intellectual abilities...and anytime we chatted, I always learned something I never knew before. But what many people didn't know about Fred was that deep down, he was a serious poet! Here's an excerpt from one untitled poem he wrote in the spring of 1972 for our high school literary magazine, "Embryo"...in light of his absence, it takes on particular poignancy: "And driving home, he wonders // If Camus knew he would // Die in his seat under the // Hanging lights, above the // Hard, black, divided path to // Home." My heartfelt wish for Fred is that he is now at peace...and at home.
