Jennifer VanOrdstrand
1967-07-10 2017-08-28Funny, beautiful, and spirited, Jennifer was an unmistakable presence in any room. You might remember her from the Marching Scots, but you may not have had a chance to catch up since then, so here's the long and short of it: She studied abroad in Europe, charmed a nerdy kid named Scott she remembered from gym class, did some more traveling around the States, achieved a Masters degree, blew out her knee on Copper Mountain, had a career as a Legal Administrative Assistant, became the mother to a daughter a lot like herself, was diagnosed with a terminal cancer, worked full-time, and continued to be the best mother she could be all the while. It was far from easy, but she faced it all with passion, wit and so much courage. I didn't get to know her for as long as I would have liked, but I got to have her as my mom and I wouldn't trade that for anything. I hope I carry some of her with me every day that I am chasing my dreams, and I think of her whenever I watch some of my favorite films or hear a good joke. Here's to Jennifer, and all the big and small ways she impacted the lives around her.
I miss her. One favorite memory was from an All State Choir trip to Evergreen. We were spazzing out over our crushes and sharing our collective distain towards the people that were mean to us. We clasped hands and skipped down a dirt path, squealing and laughing as we went. It was a quintessential teen girl moment, but I've never forgotten how I felt seen and understood. It was one of the few times in HS where I felt I belonged. I always felt like an awkward weirdo, but Jen was like, "Lean into the weird, my friend. It makes us interesting."
