Razak Bello

1994-11-17

We grieve for the loss of our classmate Razak Bello. Razak was an accomplished, serious, loving man, who died too young, after being married only 6 months to Kenya Napper Bello.

From the Atlanta Journal:

Kenya met her husband at a Midtown restaurant. She thought he was boring. too serious, yet she was drawn to him.

He had a cosmopolitan background

Born in Paris and raised in West Africa, he moved at age 8 to Berkeley, Calif. He came from a family of achievers. His Nigerian father is an entrepreneur and journalist, his American mother an art consultant.

Morehouse attracts many of America's brightest black men, but Bello stood out even there. Classmates cited his drive. Bello started two businesses while attending Morehouse and interned at Coca-Cola. A vegetarian, be often cycled 30 miles daily. He spoke fluent French.

"He was a cultured brother," said De-metriouse Russell, a friend of Bello's

"He could flow in and out of different circles with ease.*

After six years of friendship and dating. Kenya married Bello on May 28, 1994.

On his wedding night, Bello demonstrated the ferocious loyalty that endeared him to many.

Calling Wilson to thank him for participating in his wedding, Bello Icarned that his friend had just taken his 1-year-old son to the hospital. Though he was scheduled to leave for his honeymoon the next morning. Bello left home at 2 a.m. and drove to two hospitals before finding Wilson. "He just wanted to make sure ev. erything was all right," Wilson said.
