ABOUT LA GUAJIRA, COLOMBIA AND THE WAYUU PEOPLE

Situated on the northern tip of Colombia, the department of La Guajira is the poorest in Colombia. The Alta Guajira region is known for its arid climate and the area has less than ⅙ of an inch of annual rainfall. Temperatures in this region often reach 113°F at noon and drop to freezing in the desert highlands overnight.

The Wayuu are the largest indigenous group in Colombia making up about 250,000 people. The Wayuu people's living conditions are extremely harsh and the majority face extreme energy, water, and food insecurity, with growing water scarcity.

HOW WE CAN HELP

In October of 2021, GivePower’s first-ever Solar Water Farm Mobi was built in Cabo De La Vela. The system sources water from the ocean through a well. Over the past two years, the salinity of the water in the well has steadily increased and is now almost two times saltier than the ocean, which results in poorer quality of water and higher demands on our Mobi system. Currently, the system is only producing 25% of its capacity.

We have an opportunity to relocate our Solar Water Farm Mobi to leverage a better quality source of water and help this community that is in desperate need of more clean water.

ONE GOODLEAP TEAM WILL WIN

The GoodLeap Team with the largest donation totals will be nominated to take a trek - an immersive and transformative volunteer opportunity - to install solar power in La Guajira, Colombia in December, 2023.
