MIKE CORDRY
1940-04-13 2023-11-07
Michael Joseph Cordry (Mike)
There were certain things about Mike Cordry that his people could count on: generosity, in whatever situation arose; devotion to his teams — professional, college, daughters', grandkids' and old-guy players alike - an inclination toward modesty and a disinclination to order anything but salmon when out to dinner. (Mike was a smart man. Why mess with a sure thing?)
Michael Joseph Cordry died peacefully in his Queen Anne home November 7, not too far from where he began life on April 13, 1940. The first child of Eugene and Adeline Cordry, Mike attended Roosevelt High School, where he met his future wife Nancy Oldenburg in English class junior year.
Mike was a proud Husky (BS Chemical Engineering 1962) and an only slightly less proud Cardinal (MBA Stanford 1964). He and Nancy were married in 1963 and in 1964 Weyerhaeuser had the foresight to hire Mike, where he spent his whole career, universally admired for his integrity, intellect and humility. That was also the year daughter Mindy was born; sister Erin followed two years later and Mike's future as a softball coach was solidified.
Mike and Nancy travelled the world with friends and relished their time as co-captains of a loving and accomplished family. Their standing vacation each summer was a highlight— especially the 42 years the family spent converging at Stanford Sierra Camp.
Athletics were integral to Mike's life. He read every word of the sports page every day from the time he was a 12-year-old winner of the Old Woody pitching competition until the Huskies beat Oregon last month. He captained the RHS Teddies basketball team and had a lifelong devotion to volleyball and softball. He coached the girls' teams as well his peers, including the last few decades as player/manager of a softball team that won many world championships. Mike was his grandkids' first fan, supportive from the sidelines for as many games, regattas and ski races he could juggle, or the phone if he couldn't be there in person.
Mike's good-humored, matter-of-fact nature saw him through good times and bad. He met adversity with dignity and courage marked by a measure of openness rare for a man of his generation. This was never more evident than when facing the too-many cancer diagnoses his family has endured, his own two included.
Preceded in death by his beloved daughter Mindy, Mike is survived by wife of 60 years Nancy Cordry; daughter Erin Cordry (Eric Hanson); grandchildren Robin Slezak (Anthony) Max Hanson, Beck Hanson, Hailey Cordry and Luke Cordry; great grandchildren Otto and Kaia Slezak; his sister Sharon Miller; and multiple nieces and nephews.
