Rev. David W. Myers
1920-06-06 2003-09-23
DAVID WESLEY MYERS was born June 6, 1920, in Birmingham, Alabama. He was a twin to his brother, Daniel, and the sixth of twelve children born to Mary Ida and Jesse Myers. From infancy on, David was plagued with sickness and poor health. However, his health improved as he grew into adulthood, but deteriorated again as he grew into old age.
David attended public schools and college in Birmingham, graduating as an exceptionally brilliant student. After college, he taught school for one year in the public school system of Dallas County, Alabama. He was then drafted into the army and served until 1946.
At the age of 12, David accepted Christ as his personal saviour and was baptized and became a member of the Friendship Baptist Church of Birmingham, Rev. James Lige, pastor. He was active in the choir and was a teacher in the Sunday School. He subsequently joined the 45th Street Baptist Church of Birmingham, where he met and married Velma G. Clark in 1944. To this union, one daughter, Barbara Jean, was born.
After his discharge from the Army in 1946, David moved to Detroit to seek employment and to further his education. In the years following, he graduated from the Detroit Bible College and later, Wayne State University. He also studied at the University of Michigan, LaSalle University, and Chrysler Institute of Engineering.
When he was hired by the Chrysler Corporation at its Jefferson Assembly Plant in Detroit, he advanced to a management position. He was appointed to several supervisory positions where he always served with distinction. In 1977 he was forced to leave Chrysler when he did not fully recover from a serious accident. He retired on disability in 1978 and was given full pension benefits by the company and was awarded full social security benefits.
When he came to Detroit, David joined the Second Baptist Church of Detroit, where he served as a faithful member for 31 years. He served as a teacher in the Sunday School and later became the general superintendent. He also was an active choir member. Later he was appointed to the position of Director of Christian Education.
In 1976 he united with the Morning View Baptist Church where his brother, Rev. Marion Myers, was pastor. He served as the Director of Christian Education, and later his duties included that of office manager, trustee, and church clerk.
Rev. Myers accepted the call to the gospel ministry in 1982 and was licensed by the church to preach. In 1984 he was ordained as a minister of the Gospel. He later became Assistant to the Pastor, a position he held for two years. In 1997 he united with the Third New Hope Church, where he served as a faithful member until his health began to fail him.
Rev. Myers was a Christian educator and many gained insight and training in the Scriptures and church administration through his teaching and leadership. When his health worsened he continued to attend church when he could. Rev. Myers (he preferred to be called David), will be remembered as a highly educated and intelligent person who chose to spend his life helping others. He was always humble, caring, and willing to do whatever he could for all those who sought his help and counsel.
After a lengthy illness, Rev. David Myers departed this life on September 25, 2003. He leaves to mourn his passing; one daughter, Barbara Baham of California; three grandchildren, Tanya, Kelley, and Mark Wilcox; three great-grandchildren, Armond Chalmers, Joshua, and Marissa Guillory; one brother, George Myles of Birmingham; one sister, Mrs. Christine Harrison of Detroit; four sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, other relatives and friends.
