A car slammed into a concrete bridge and burst into flames on the Turner Turnpike west of Barstow early today, killing 20-year-old twin sisters from Elmhurst, Ill.

Their 17-year-old brother was pulled from the flaming wreckage and survived.

The victims were Diana Janit Blanchfield and Deborah Jenette Blanchfield, both of Elmhurst, Ill.

Highway Patrolman Bill Blue said the brother, James C. Blanchfield, was driving the 1970 model sedan and apparently went to sleep.

It burst into flames upon impact but Blue and an unidentified passing motorist arrived quickly enough to pull the brother to safety. The driver suffered burns and was taken to Bristow Memorial Hospital.

The accident occurred at 6 a.m. at mile 57.8 west of Barstow.

Blue said the three were enroute to their home in Illinois after visiting in California.
