GRAYSON, Susan "Susie" Nelson, 59, of Henrico, died peacefully on January 9, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer.

She is survived by her loving husband of 35 years, Grant S. Grayson; her son, Andy Grayson; her daughter, Erin Grayson; Andy's wife, Kristen Grayson; granddaughter, Mary Grayson; her mother, Margery Nelson; her brothers, Thomas Nelson and wife, Cheryl, David Nelson and wife, Cathy; her brother-in-law, Craig Grayson and his wife, Nancy. She was predeceased by her father, Tucker Nelson.

Susie was a graduate of The Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism; was a writer for the Chicago Tribune; worked in the publication offices for the University of Richmond and MCV; and was a writer for the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Susie was known for her optimism, friendship and thoughtfulness. She would want to thank all of her friends and especially Dr. Randal West and his staff.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 12, at Bliley's Funeral Home, located at 3801 Augusta Ave., in Richmond, from 6 to 8 p.m. A celebration of Susie's life will be held on Thursday, January 13, at 2 p.m. at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, located at 12291 River Rd., in Goochland.

In lieu of flowers, Susie's family would appreciate contributions to the Susan Nelson Grayson Undergraduate Scholarship Fund at Northwestern University, 2020 Ridge Ave., 3rd Floor, Evanston, Ill. 60208. This scholarship was established to honor Susie and nurture a future generation of aspiring journalists.
