Sula Lima

1990-06-19
Sula Lima married Jovino Sylos, who also had been an AFS student, in 1975. They had three girls — Andrea, Isabela and Gabriela. Sula had a long fight with cancer when her daughters were young. She died on June 14, 1990. She was survived by her husband, Jovino, and their three daughters who were at that time 13, 11 and 8.

All three of Sula's daughters now are married. Andrea has a daughter, age 10, and a son, age 8; Isabela has a son, age 4; and Gabriela is attending the university. Jovino is still working as a judge and is remarried. Sula's family lives in Sao Paulo, Brazil and her mother just turned 96 years old last week.

After Sula's death, someone sent this passage to Sula's host family. "In an interview for the May 29, 1970, issue of YORK-Hi, Sula said, 'Throughout my year at York, I learned to understand different people and different customs. But I found that the people here in America are the same as people in other countries. They all have the same feeling of love and friendship.' Sula's love and friendship will be greatly missed."
