John W Mulholland, Jr, age 73, of Willowbrook, passed away unexpectedly, of natural causes on December 1, 2024. He was the devoted son of the late Jack and late Mary Edith (nee Barrett) Mulholland; loving brother of Nora, Susan (the late Guy) Nodot and Edward Mulholland; dear uncle of Alex Nodot; cousin and friend of many.
John attended York Community High School and was active in both Track and Cross country, where he trained and was inspired by the legendary Coach Joe Newton. He attended his father’s Alma Mater, Marquette University, graduating in 1974 with a BA Major in History/Political Science.
John enjoyed a long and successful banking career in private and retail banking specializing in credit analysis, retiring in 2014 as a VP with Fifth Third Bank.
Since 2004, John was a devoted Track & Field and Cross-Country Coach and Mentor for the St. Francis Xavier Elementary School. His dedication to the SFX community was apparent to all and best put in words by his fellow coaches, as follows:
"John Mulholland or ‘Coach Mul’ as he was called, guided young 5-8th grade athletes of the St Francis Xavier school of La Grange Illinois cross-country and track teams for over 20 years. His teams were always well-coached and competitive, bringing home multiple Illinois IESA state and SPL trophies.
John was a driving force behind the growth and success of the SPL, or Suburban Parochial League, comprised of local Catholic schools in and around the western Suburbs of Chicago. Over the years, John served as SPL president, chaired multiple committees and was the official starter at SPL meets. Everyone knew and appreciated Coach Mul.
Perhaps his greatest gift was the impact he had on the students and families of St Francis Xavier. His roles as Head Coach went far beyond running instruction. His love, care and dedication to the health and well-being of the students of St. Francis Xavier will be greatly missed.
As his fellow coaches, we are shocked and saddened by the loss of our friend. We love and will miss you, Coach Mul."
