The light from afar shone radiantly as the gates of heaven opened for our mother on Saturday, December 12, 1998.

Ruby Katherine MacDonald Young, daughter of the late Arthur Cornelius and Margaret Kemp MacDonald, was a devoted wife, mother, homemaker, grandmother, and friend. She loved family-oriented activities.

Mama attended school in Greensboro, North Carolina, married her childhood sweetheart, the
now deceased Thomas Rudolph Young (December 1997), and had four children. Although sick, the highlight of her life was the celebration of their Golden Wedding Anniversary at Britthaven Nursing Center (September 1996). She joined Mt. Tabor Church during the early years of marriage and served on several committees and organizations until her battle with declining health. Even as the thief of illness attacked her body, Mama was still uplifting the Lord. When no other words she could utter, she stated "The Lord Is My Shepherd." Her willingness to serve the community was shown as she presided over the L. Richardson Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, joined the NAACP, and performed charitable acts through the Cherry Blossom Garden Club. Her floral designs and awards made us proud.

Mama was blessed to have had such a loving family and to be surrounded by loving friends. Her fondest treasure was family quality time. Even the many stings of death within her immediate family did not erase her precious memories of happier days.

Others preceding her in death were sisters, Mary Palmer (Bob), (twin) Ruth Leaverson (James), Hattie (Veda) Wood (Eddie), and one brother, Edward S. Kemp.

Mama leaves to love her children, Wanda Y Williams (Bobby), Sandra Y. Pressley, (Danny), Carol Y. Shepard, Rudolph R. Young (LaZandra); a special daughter, Joyce Hairston (William), all of Greensboro; seven grandchildren, Danielle Erwin-Marsh (Bruce), Reginald Erwin, Daniel Young, Katherine Stubblefield (David), Greg Williams, Trey Hairston, and Christopher Shepard, all of Greensboro; eight great-grandchildren; two aunts, Mrs. Mary K.
