Kathy Lane

1995-11-11
Kathy died of stomach cancer. Kathy’s mother Hilda related her fond memories of Kathy. “Everyone always said they loved Kathy – even when she was 3 years old!” Kathy became a nurse and interned at Allegheny General Hospital. She met a man at the beach who was in the service in Virginia. Within 6 months he was asking her parents for permission to marry Kathy. “It was a beautiful union!” They had two sons. After Kathy’s death, Jerry raised them. Unfortunately, he too recently passed away. Jerry was very supportive of Kathy during the tough year from diagnosis until Kathy died. Ironically, Kathy was a nurse at the Anderson Cancer Center, and then became a patient.

We were definitely scared rabbits - coming to such a big school with so many kids! Our families were friends also - we all went camping together and had many vacations to the sea shore. On vacations she was always one of the first to make new friends and put together plans for the trip. Kathy and I never had a class together in high school until our senior year - the last period of the day we were in Mr. Davis' class - some kind of science class as I recall. We were so happy to AT LAST have a class together!! We had the double desks in the class room and we were able to sit side by side. I know we drove Mr. Davis crazy!! Kathy was one of the funniest people I ever knew - she loved to make up puns and rhymes. We were always laughing. Kathy also lived next to one of the NA principals – Mr. Grine. I always thought it was so weird to see a principal out cutting grass or something like that when I was at her house. Kathy and I also went to the senior banquet together along with 2 friends from the class: Tom Ebken and Keith Fanks. I still remember laughing A LOT that night! After high school Kathy went to nursing school and then ended up marrying a fellow who was in the navy. As people do, we drifted apart. We did connect again when Kathy was living in Texas and I was living in New Orleans. With good friends it doesn't matter how long you have been apart - seeing each other again was like we had been seeing each other every day. Unfortunately Kathy developed stomach cancer. She passed away before her parents did and it was very hard on them. She was about 40 years old when she died, so it was sometime in the early 90s. (92 - 95 I would say). Kathy was a warm hearted person who was always making others laugh; she was generous and forgiving to all. She always made special presents and wrapped them up so nicely. I came across some pictures from grade school not long ago - made me remember all the crazy times with "the nuns"!! I'm sure that if Kathy were here now she would be laughing about something!! Every time I pass by Ingomar North I think about her........wishing she were still here.
