Flashback 09/09/79

On September 9th, 1979, two young residents of Pleasant Hills, Kenny Long and Brad Reed, climbed into an abandoned mine shaft in Jefferson Cemetery as a challenge from friends. Upon entrance into the mine shaft, both boys succumbed to what was later determined as Carbon Dioxide poisoning . Patrolmen Alby Breisinger and Joe Kenney were dispatched to the scene of the accident. Alby was first to arrive at the scene and believing the boys had fallen into the shaft, climbed in to rescue the boys. He was also overcome by the Carbon Dioxide. Joe Kenney was able to radio in additonal resources to the site. EMT's were able to revive Alby on the scene. Sadly, Kenny Long and Brad Reed passed away that day. Alby survived on life support for the next 2 days but without brain function. On September 12th he was taken off life support as preparations were made for his organ donations. To memorialize these heroic acts, a scholarship was created in his honor and has been awarded to a graduating senior of Thomas Jefferson High School. The scholarship has been awarded on annual basis since 1980. This event has been organized to replenish the scholarship fund and to honor the memories of Kenny Long, Brad Reed and Alby.
