MCLEOD, Donald Alexander September 1, 1940 - August 14, 2019
The family of Donald A. McLeod (age 78) announces his tragic death on August 14, 2019 due to a canoeing accident in northern Saskatchewan.
Don was born and raised in Saskatoon and graduated from Bedford Road Collegiate in 1959. In 1963, he married Marcia Churchill and together they raised three children. Don began his teaching career in La Loche in 1967, and taught in Buffalo Narrows from 1968 to 1973. During these years he also established McLeod Trail Ltd.- a fly-in hunting and fishing business that brought him much enjoyment over many decades.
In 1973 the family moved back to Saskatoon and Don purchased a small acreage northwest of the city where he farmed and for many years also raised cattle and horses. In the 1980s and 1990s, Don resumed his teaching career, remarried, and also worked at Kilburn Hall. A constant throughout Don's life was his love for the outdoors, which included growing crops, raising animals, and especially hunting and fishing in northern Saskatchewan. He also took great pride in his Métis heritage and was particularly proud of the fact that his grandfather, William Grant, was the first MLA for Batoche.
His parents, Robert and Thelma McLeod, brother and sister-in-law Larry and Rhoda McLeod, and also his brother Bob McLeod predeceased Don.
Don is survived by his son Donnie (Dana) McLeod, daughters Marla (Rick) Johnson and Shanna (Curtis) Bell, grandchildren Jillian and Fraser, Ella and Nick, Olivia and Mackay, brothers Jack (Maxine) McLeod and Bill McLeod, numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins, his companion Susi Borton, and his faithful dog Sky.
The family extends a special thanks to Don's cousin Barry Grant for accompanying and assisting Dad on his last fishing trip. We take comfort in knowing Dad died doing what he loved most. Don's funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 4, 2019 at Hillcrest Funeral Home (210 Wess Road, Saskatoon, SK). In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Bedford Road Alumni Association (contact BRCIAlumni@gmail.com for details). Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.hillcrestmemorial.ca Arrangements entrusted to Hillcrest Funeral Home.
