Kathleen was born on a farm in what used to be known as the Great Deer District in Saskatchewan. Her parents Hannah Jane and George Arthur Newsham raised six children: Lloyd, Kathleen, Margaret, Gwendolyn, David and Ivor. Kathleen took her public schooling in a one-room school called Merry Home, her high school at Bedford Road Collegiate in Saskatoon and teacher training at the Normal School in Saskatoon. She taught in rural one-room schools in the Kindersley and Rosetown areas. In 1946 she married Reece Alfred Swalm of Kindersley, SK, and they farmed 6 miles north of town where they raised their family and were prosperous farmers.
She is predeceased by her husband Reece; her children Edwyn, Robert, Sheila and Owen; her parents; her siblings Lloyd, Gwendolyn, David and Ivor; her sisters-in-law Pearl Newsham, Lois Newsham, Fay Campbell, Vivian Copeland and Hazel Calhoon; and her brothers-in-law Hartley Fredeen, Keith Campbell, Glenn Gardner, Sam Copeland, William Schmidt, George Calhoon, and Earl Swalm (who died in WWII).
Left to mourn are her children Evan (Angie), Kathleen (Don) Burt, Lorne (Laurie), Brenda (Joe Haddad), Barbara (Lindsay) Gray, Stephen (Denise), Morley, Yvette Gutenberg, and Earl (Christine); 15 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; her sister Margaret Fredeen; her sisters-in-law June Newsham, Vera Schmidt, and Lona Gardner; her good friend June Nargang; as well as many nieces and nephews and friends.
