HOLTSLANDER, Pat
With great sadness we announce the passing of Pat Holtslander (nee Carpani) on July 13, 2005 at the Lutheran Sunset Home in Saskatoon.
Pat was predeceased by her parents, Gordon Carpani (1956) and Alma Frances Carpani (1967); and cousin, Barney Jones. She will be dearly missed by her loving husband, Jim; children, Cathy Holtslander (Lyle Orchard), Gord Holtslander (Franci) and their two children, Mayah and Abby, Andrea Holtslander (Ariel Santana); brother, Dick Carpani (Donna); brother-in-law, Bill Holtslander (Helen); Aunts Jean Fitzpatrick and Margie Burkheiser (Johnny); cousins, Ed, Carol, Rod, Keith, Jeannie and Jack; as well as a wide circle of friends.
Pat was born in Saskatoon on January 17, 1939. Other than a short period in Prince Albert during the war, she grew up in Saskatoon. She attended Caswell Hill School and Bedford Road Collegiate, where she made life-long friendships. Though her father passed away before she finished high school, he was always a beacon to her, reminding her to live life with joy in her heart. She attended Teachers College and became a teacher, beginning her career in Cabri. She met her husband-to-be, Jim, in 1958 at Camp Easter Seal where they were camp counsellors. They were married in Saskatoon on August 17, 1959. They raised their family in Saskatoon. Pat loved being a mother and raising her kids. She was a full member of the close-knit community that their Harrison Crescent neighborhood became over the years.
Education was very important to Pat. She not only became a teacher, but went to university while raising her children. She convocated with her education degree the same year daughter Cathy graduated from high school. She worked as a substitute teacher and as a teacher-aide in Saskatoon schools, often with students with special needs. She was a member of St. Martin's United Church, where she taught Sunday School and belonged to the UCW. Upon her son Gord's marriage to Franci, Pat took great interest in her daughter-in-law's Jewish faith and heritage. She was very proud of her granddaughters' accomplishments at the Synagogue.
Pat developed very strong values regarding quality of life for persons living with chronic and life-threatening health issues. She received an award from the Multiple Sclerosis Society for her efforts to assist people living with MS, and supported Jim in his struggles with MS. When she was struck with cancer she was helped by the Hope Cancer Support centre, and in turn contributed her energy and experience to help others living with cancer.
Pat enjoyed music and the arts. She ensured her children had music lessons, which has been a lifetime gift to the family. One of her great pleasures was to listen to Andrea play Chopin. Pat was keen on travel. Trips to Cuba, Hawaii, Costa Rica and Europe were highlights. She also enjoyed travelling in Canada to see sights and visit friends and relatives. Pat also made many friends and had great experiences as a member of International Training in Communication (ITC). Her diagnosis with cancer in 1996 cast a shadow that she was able to translate into living each day fully as a precious gift of time. Her courage and dignity throughout her long illness has been a source of strength and inspiration for all who knew her.
Jim, Cathy, Gord, Franci, Andrea and Dick would like to extend heartfelt appreciation to the staff at St. Paul's Hospital Palliative Care and Lutheran Sunset Home, as well as to Dr. Heather Downes and Dr. Gary Hanson, who provided our wife, mother and sister with kind and caring support during her difficult final months. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 19 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Martin's United Church, 2617 Clarence Ave. S., in Saskatoon. Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Hope Cancer Help Centre and Camp Easter Seal. Email condolences may be sent to mail@saskatoonfuneralhome.com. Arrangements have been entrusted to Saskatoon Funeral Home.
