It is with great sadness the family announces the death of Allister Taylor occurred on November 17th, 2004 at Saskatoon Convalescent Home.
Allister was born in Strathaven, Scotland on December 23rd , 1916 to parents James Taylor and Annie Watson Glass. Allister arrived in Canada and Saskatoon with his family in June of 1919. He attended Westmount and Caswell elementary schools and Bedford Road Collegiate. Upon the death of his father in 1935 Allister left school to enter the family business, Taylor's Flour and Feed, which was established in Saskatoon in 1921 and still operates today on Highway #16 at Saskatoon Auction Mart.
In 1936 Allister played with the Saskatoon Quakers, and in the last year of senior football in 1937 he played with the Saskatoon Collegians Football Club. Allister continued in the business except during the war years when he saw service in Great Britain, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany with the SLI. He had the misfortune being on the ill-fated SS Monte Alvene when it was torpedoed in the Mediterranean on the way to Italy.
Allister returned to the family business after the war and took up an active life in his church and local affairs. He joined the Kinsmen club in 1947 and transferred to the K-40 Club in 1959 serving as president in 1975. He joined the Rotary Club of Saskatoon, 1965, was a Paul Harris Fellow and had a record of 37 years of perfect attendance. He served on the Public School Board from 1959 to 1964 and was a member the Saskatchewan School Board Trustees Association. Allister served his community on a number of boards including the YMCA, Neufeld Seeds, Saskatoon Exhibition Board, and Oliver Lodge where he was the Chairman and first Chairman of Oliver Place. In the 1950's he chaired Saskatoon's first 'porchlight' campaign raising money for aid to Holland and Northwest Europe which had suffered severe damage due to high winds and flooding. Mayor John McAskill subsequently recruited Allister who successfully chaired a second 'porchlight' fundraiser coordinating all Saskatoon service clubs for the city's share of the construction costs of 86 units of a low rental housing project for Pleasant Hill area. During his many years at Third Avenue United Church Allister served as Elder, Steward, Treasurer, Historian, Presbytery Delegate, Pastoral Relations Chair, and overall booster and flag bearer.
Allister will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his family. He is survived by wife, Amelia Ross Taylor; son, Murray Taylor (Carol Boyle); daughter, Ardath (Reg) Larson; step-son, Bill (Cheryl) Ross of Ottawa, ON; step-daughters, Heather Rodden of London, England, and Lauralee (Ed) Kilgour of United Arab Emirates. He is also survived by grandchildren, Keri (Stu) Sutton, Jared (Carmen) Larson, Katrina Wilson, Kirsty Taylor, Andrew Taylor, Ben Kilgour, Ashley Thomas, Nicole Thomas, Julia Ross, Dan Ross; and numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives . Allister was predeceased by parents, James and Annie; first wife; Doree Taylor; and sister; Jean Cust.
Funeral Services will take place on Monday, November 22nd, 2004 at Third Avenue United Church at 2:00 p.m. conducted by Rev. Alison West.
