BEAVIS, Barbara January 6, 1947 - June 20, 2021
It is with great sadness we announce the death of Barbara Anne Beavis (nee Fisher) on June 20, 2021 after a brief illness. She will be remembered as an incredible mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Her life was characterized by love, devotion, respect, kindness and grace.
Barbara was born in Saskatoon on January 6, 1947 to Netta (nee Gallie) from Tain, Scotland and David Douglas Fisher from Methil, Scotland. She was the sixth of seven children in the Fisher family including twins George and Jimmy, Ruby, Janet, David and younger brother Johnny who arrived 10 years later. Their large family lived at 111 Avenue K South in the early days in a small home with a coal fired stove and no plumbing. Netta cleaned houses and later worked for the Dovell family while David - aged 59 when she was born - worked at McGavin's Bakery. She was very proud of her upbringing and those years fostered a deep love of family and respect for hard work. She attended school at Princess Alexandra and later Bedford Road collegiate where she had good grades and was very popular being named Hi-Y Queen.
With a love of art and all things beautiful, she set an early goal of becoming an interior designer. At that time however, her older siblings were starting families of their own, her father had passed away and her aging Grandmother from Scotland had come to live with them. So she put aside her plans, stayed home and started working to help her mum with rent and the care of young Johnny. Her first job was at Gordie Brandt's music studio where she gained experience and lifelong friendships. On her lunch breaks she would walk by Holliday-Scott Interiors and stare in the window dreaming of one day working there. Thankfully, her dreams came true, and her personal and professional paths were forever changed.
Her early career took her from Holliday-Scott Interiors to William Switzer and Associates in Vancouver where she honed her skills as a designer and experienced life away from home for the first time. But one of her regular customers at Holliday-Scott's - Bob Beavis - kept calling and visiting Vancouver. His persistence eventually won out and she agreed to return to Saskatoon in 1972 with them stopping in Jasper, AB to get married on the way home. While their formal marriage did eventually end, they shared a lifelong love and respect for one another with a closeness that continued right up until Bob's death in 2013.
Barbara's true love arrived on June 6, 1974 with the birth of Cole - her 'one and only.' Motherhood became her true calling and words cannot describe the love they shared and the closeness of their relationship. Caring for Cole and raising him well was her main priority so she moved on from Holliday-Scott's and opened her own design business - Interiors By Barbara Beavis - which operated for nearly 40 years. This allowed her the flexibility to be at home, involved with school activities, never miss a hockey practice or game and develop close connections with Cole's friends and their families.
She took tremendous pride in her business and work as a designer and but was also very involved in the community. She was passionate about children and the arts with volunteer work as a consultant for the Le Leche League, Saskatoon Creative Playschool, Home and School at Ecole Victoria, Greystone Heights and Aden Bowman. She Chaired the International Year of the Child conference held in Saskatoon in 1979, was a member of the Citizens Advisory Council to the Saskatoon Board of Education in the 1980's and served on the Board of Directors of SIAST for six years. As lifelong lover of the arts she served on the Board of Directors of Mendel Art Gallery and was a member and Vice-Chair of Persephone Theatre Board of Directors and City of Saskatoon Visual Arts Placement Jury. She championed fundraising efforts for the Ronald McDonald House, Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal and Hospital Foundations through the Festival of Trees.
Family and friends were of paramount importance and her home of over forty years on Kirk Crescent was the site of countless gatherings from Christmas dinners to pool parties, weddings, showers and memorials. She loved flowers and gardening and maintaining the beauty of the indoor and outdoor spaces of her home.
Barbara's 2nd and 3rd true loves came with the arrival of Malynn in 2012 and Bobby in 2014. She deeply loved her grandchildren and cherished them as babies and more recently with after school visits, sleepovers, summer days in the pool and quiet time reading, doing crafts and snuggling. One of the greatest tragedies of Barbara's passing is the limited years Malynn and Bobby were able to grow up with their beloved Nana.
Left to mourn but cherish her memory are her son Cole (Lauren) and their children Malynn and Bobby. Her older sister Janet and her dear brother Johnny (Cheryl.) Brother and sister in-laws, Barrie, Marion, Janis and Beverly. Nieces and Nephews: Cailin, Davey, Debbie, Alex, Netta, David, Janet, Jamie, Laura, George, Scott, Danny, Jay, Tracie, Darcie, Laurie and Chris along with all of their spouses and children. Dear friends: Mona, Shirley, Marilyn, Cindy, Joan, Hermelyn, Darryl, Tim, Tania, George, Eleanor, Kevin and Ursula.
She was predeceased by her parents David and Netta Fisher, brothers George Fisher, James Fisher and David Fisher, sister Ruby Hennigan, brother-in law Dale Beavis, nephew Eddie Foster and Cole's father Bob Beavis.
There will be no formal funeral service. Everyone is encouraged to remember her in their own way and think of her when they see beauty in the world. We will love and miss her forever. Condolences may be left at www.saskatoonfuneralhome.com . Arrangements entrusted to
