It is with great sadness that the family of Donald Zuck announces his death on February 23rd, 2007.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Elma; children Catherine (Jack Manning); Peter; Tony (Alice Wong); his grandchildren, Joe and Emma; his sister Julie Saganski; his sisters-in-law, Patricia Kelly, Joyce Klassen, Doris Zuck, Henrietta Zuck, Eleanor Kelly, Betty Kelly, Jane Kelly, Sally(Walter) Gardzilewich; brother-in-law Alvin Kelly; numerous nieces and nephews and his many friends.
Don was predeceased by his parents, Anthony and Catherine; his first wife, Vera; his sisters, Anne (Jack) Zaleschuk and Anastasia; his brothers, Bohdan and Victor; his parents-in-law, Hillary and Mary Bociurko; his step mother, Helen Zuck his brothers-in-law, Peter Saganski, Les Klassen, Wilmer, Ralph, Howard and Carl Kelly.
Don was born on December 27th, 1918 on a farm at Hafford, Saskatchewan. His pre WWII education ended with a Grade XII certificate from Bedford Road Collegiate. This was the period of the great depression. On November 11th 1940, in his freshman year in the College of Agriculture, he joined the Royal Canadian Airforce. He served as a pilot in England, North Africa and Italy. He was discharged with the rank of Flying officer in 1944, and in the same year married Vera Bociurko.
Making use of the Canadian Government's education plan for returning veterans, Don enrolled in the college of Pharmacy in Edmonton, and graduated as a gold-medalist from the College of Pharmacy in 1948. He lectured at the University of British Columbia during the year of 1948-1949 The years of 1949-1952 were spent doing graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin, which earned him a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Pharmacy. From 1952 to 1965 he was involved in pharmaceutical research for Eli Lilly & company in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Don was widowed on November 6th, 1957. He married Elma Kelly on July 12th, 1958 at Sacred Heart Church in Swift Current. In 1965 he accepted a position as Associate Professor in the College of Pharmacy in Saskatoon and after the second year was promoted to full professor and retired in 1986.
Don was active in the Knights of Columbus beginning in 1947, and held many positions, including Grand Knight, District Deputy, Chapter President, and was Honorary Life Member of the 3rd and 4th Degrees of the Knights of Columbus. He was a Charter member of the Canadian Legion, Branch #187, Edmonton, Alberta. He was an active member of the Drug Quality Assessment Committee of the Saskatchewan Prescription Drug Plan and he is a fellow of the American Pharmaceutical Association.
Don had a lifelong love of music and dancing and was a member of the Holy Spirit choir for more than 40 years. He played many musical instruments over his life and enjoyed frequent gigs with the Saskatoon Jammers, until a short period before his death. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing with his boys, golfing, driving vacations and was always learning new skills, including piano tuning, and computers. The Vigil for Don will be held on Monday, February 26th at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 27th at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Father Ken Beck as the celebrant. Both services will be held from Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church (114 Kingsmere Blvd). In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to a charity of your choice.
