SIEMENS, Peter
Passed away peacefully on October 21, 2017 at Sherbrooke Community Centre, Saskatoon. Peter Siemens was born on March 25, 1927 in Balgonie, Saskatchewan to Kornelius K. and Justina Siemens.
He is survived by his wife Audrey (Clarke) Siemens; seven children: Marjorie (Graham) Knox, Kenneth (Deanna) Siemens, Ronald (Connie) Siemens, Timothy (Hellen) Siemens, Barbara (Cameron) Milner, Elizabeth (Roger) Williamson, and James (Anna Ringstrom) Siemens; twenty-four grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers Daniel (Judy) Siemens, Walter (Aida) Siemens, Erwen (Lil) Siemens and many nephews and nieces.
When he was 10 years old, Peter's family moved from Balgonie to Saskatoon where he attended Caswell School and Bedford Road High School. He completed grade 12 at Mennonite Academy, later to be renamed Rosthern Junior College. After obtaining a B.A. at the University of Saskatchewan he taught high school at Forest Grove, B.C. for one year. Following this, in 1949 he married Audrey Clarke. The young couple moved immediately out to Vancouver where they both obtained their Secondary School Teaching Certificates. Following that Peter and Audrey taught at Salmo, B.C. for one year and then for two years at Estevan, SK.
In 1953 Peter was accepted into the College of Medicine at the U of S where he became part of the first graduating class in 1957. He practiced family medicine in Outlook, SK for 9 years from 1958-1967 before pursuing a residency in neurology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota from 1967-70. In 1970 he moved his family back to Saskatoon where he began a long and distinguished practice as a neurologist from 1971 to 2002. During this time he maintained a private practice and saw patients in both St. Paul's and Royal University Hospital. Peter was highly regarded by his colleagues. He always greeted his patients with a warm smile and handshake in his office. Peter also enjoyed serving on the board of the family business, Siemens Transport.
Peter was a loving and caring father to his seven children. They remember many camping, fishing and canoe trips with him and are forever grateful for his involvement at Manitoba Pioneer Camp as first counsellor and then camp doctor for many summers, taking along the whole family for the experience. Through these summers of camping, Peter instilled in his children a love of the outdoors which blesses them to this day. Peter's blue eyes always had a special twinkle for his grandchildren. He loved to read stories to them and teach them woodworking skills and how to play chess. Peter helped build fences with his children and playground projects for his grandchildren. He was always only a phone call away when his children needed help, making many house calls.
His faith in Jesus Christ was of utmost importance to Peter. He was baptized as a teenager into the Mennonite Brethren Church and remained active in the Mennonite churches that he attended for most of his life. He provided leadership by serving several terms on church councils. Peter also served on boards of various charities. He was a man who gave generously to individuals and groups who needed help. Truth and justice were values he upheld with a high standard of integrity. We remember Peter as a loving and generous brother, father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather and above all humble follower of Jesus.
Peter was predeceased by his parents, Kornelius K. Siemens (1966) and Justina (Wiens) Siemens (1985), his brother Kornelius Siemens (1961) and his sister Nell Roberts (1999).
The family wants to thank the staff of the Prairie Lane Neighborhood at Sherbrooke Community Centre for their compassionate care of Peter over the past four years. There will be a family graveside ceremony at 11:00 a.m. followed by a memorial of Peter's life held at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 1636 Acadia Drive, at 2:30 p.m., both on Friday, October 27. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the MARTENS WARMAN FUNERAL HOME (306-934-4888).
