GREGOR, Melvin Lloyd
The family of Melvin Lloyd Gregor are saddened to announce his passing on January 8, 2016 at his residence in Veteran Village at Sherbrooke Community Centre.
Melvin was born in Netherhill, SK in 1927 and moved to Saskatoon with his family as a young child. He took his schooling at Princess Alexandra and Bedford Road Collegiate. In 1944, Melvin joined the Canadian Army, as a Paratrooper. Upon discharge, Melvin worked in the mines in Sudbury ON. for a few years before he moved back home and got a job working at Scott National Fruit in Saskatoon. It was there that he met his soon to be wife, Glenna Cockrill. Mel and Glenna got married in 1955 and had three children.
In the early years Mel worked at Wilson Stationers, as a travelling salesman. In 1964, he and Glenna purchased Mel's IGA store, which they ran for 10 years. It wasn't long after selling that store that they purchased a carwash/gas bar and operated that as Mel's Car Care Center. Ten years later, he decided to retire and live his life on the golf course. He and Glenna bought a home along the shores of Jackfish Lake in Meota, SK and spent their summers at the lake golfing, surrounded by his grandchildren and his childrens' pets.
In the winter, the snowbirds headed to Yuma, Arizona where they golfed and for a few years, even took up a new hobby in Square Dancing. Mel was a very avid 5 pin bowler and even represented Saskatchewan at the Western 5 Pin Bowling Championships in the sixties, but his passion was golf. He, along with his brothers, sister Ethel and Glenna, were longtime members of Saskatoon G&CC. Mel, his brothers and close friends golfed together every Wednesday afternoon and every weekend. Upon retirement, he and Glenna golfed at North Battleford G&CC, Desert Hills G&CC in Yuma, AZ and Wildwood Golf Course.
Dad was a family man first and foremost. He, his brothers and sisters looked after and supported their mother until her passing. The Gregor family spent most of their holidays together, celebrated birthdays and special dates together, usually around a big table playing cards, having a few drinks and laughing. Mel was very proud of his kids and their many accomplishments. He will be remembered by his family for many things, his passion for people, his work ethic, and most of all for his smile, which could light up any room. He was always there with a welcoming handshake and a big smile. Even in his last few years, while living with Dementia, he invariably had a big smile and a hello for all who greeted him.
Melvin is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Glenna; three children: Bob (Linda) Gregor, Linda Gregor (Keith Payne), Pat Gregor (Arnold Beauchesne); four grandchildren: Daniella, Amy, Jennifer, Melanie; three great-grandchildren: Isobel, Andrew and Emily; sisters-in-law; Lee and Ruth Gregor; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Melvin was predeceased by his mother Tonita, four brothers Alfred, Norman, Donald, Gordon; and four sisters Mildred Kerr, Ruth Stuart, Evelyn Murray and Ethel Mohs.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the caregivers and staff of Veterans Village and Sherbrooke, who helped care for Dad the past few years. A Memorial Service and interment for Melvin will be held when golf season opens, at Hillcrest Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Ronald McDonald House or Veteran Village.
