ROY NAZARENKO August 10, 1934 - December 6, 2013
With deep sorrow we announce the death of Roy Nazarenko in the Palliative Care Unit at St. Paul's Hospital. Thank you to the staff who provided such compassionate care to Roy and his family.

Roy was born in Saskatoon on August 10, 1934 to Andrew and Petronella Nazarenko. Roy attended school in Saskatoon at Princess Alexandra Elementary School, Bedford Road Collegiate and the University of Saskatchewan.

Roy had a wide and varied working life: painting grain elevators and working for PFRA inspecting dams in Alberta, picking tobacco in Ontario, travelling Saskatchewan highways for Gates Rubber and testing soil samples for Underwood McLellan Assoc. He and his brother Ed co-owned Aero Decorators before Roy purchased the Broadway Cafe in 1981.

Roy retired on July 1, 2000 with the sale of the Cafe, spending his summers redesigning and working in his yard and winters puttering around the house completing projects he had not had time to do before. Roy loved to cook and experiment with new recipes using his friends as guinea pigs much to their delight. He thoroughly enjoyed entertaining whether it was in the back yard or around the kitchen table. Roy had a sharp mind, a great sense of humor, and a kind and generous spirit. He was never shy about expressing his opinions whether you wanted to hear them or not.

Roy was diagnosed with lung cancer in April 2013 and passed away on December 6, 2013. During those few short months, Roy spent a wonderful summer and fall in relatively good health enjoying his world with family and friends. His back yard of which he was extremely proud was his sanctuary.

Roy was predeceased by his parents Andrew and Nellie, sister Helen McEachern, brother-in-law Jack McEachern and nephew Brett McEachern. Roy leaves to treasure his memory his spouse Susan; his children Roxanne, Valery and Blaine; Susan's daughter Jane (Bill) Smith (sons David and Gordon); brother and sister-in-law Ed and Myrna; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Bill and Lynnda McBean; Ed and Myrna's children Darcy and Bart Nazarenko and Lori (Wade) Woolford (son Dawson); Helen and Jack's children Marcelyn McEachern (Darren) (sons Shawn and Jack) and Darren and Ross McEachern.

Roy often showed the world his tough, logical exterior; but those who knew him saw the kind, sensitive, fiercely loyal person beneath this exterior. He was a private person who lived his life according to his values with few apologies or regrets. We have lost an exceptional man who leaves his mark on the hearts of all who knew him.

At Roy's request there will be no funeral. Cremation has taken place. The family gratefully declines flowers and in keeping with Roy's love of animals requests those wishing to do so to make donations in Roy's name to the Saskatoon SPCA, 5028 Clarence Avenue South or the Saskatoon Zoo Society 1903 Forestry Farm Park Drive. Roy's family is hosting a come-and-go tea at the W.A. Edward's Centre, 333 - 4th Avenue North on Monday, December 16 from 1:30 until 4:00 pm. Please come and share your memories with us and each other. Courtesy parking will be provided at Saskatoon Funeral Home across 4th Avenue. Condolences may be sent to mail@saskatoonfuneralhome.com. Arrangements have been entrusted to SASKATOON FUNERAL HOME (306-244-5577).
