ALLEGRETTO, Marion E. April 17, 1921 - July 1, 2012
Mom's "circle of life" was completed peacefully at St. Paul's Hospital on Sunday, July 1st 2012 with family at her side.
She was predeceased by her husband Roger Allegretto in 1955; her parents Philip and Agnes; her brothers Tommy and Clifford, and sisters Jean, Hilda and May.
She will be lovingly remembered by daughters Carol (Ken) Holmes and Judy (Ed) Cherry and by her grandchildren Curtis (Tami) Holmes from Calgary, Beauty (Ed) Faulkner; Brad (Verna) Cherry from Moosomin, SK and Kirk Cherry; great-grandchildren LeRae and Austin Faulkner, Zachary Holmes and stepbrother Russell Aaserude, Kaleb and Kiersten Cherry and Jace, Jaridan and Tayson Cherry from Moosomin as well as sister Gladys Wiebe together with relative and friends.
Mom was raised on the family farm in Isham, SK, graduated from Bedford Road Collegiate, met a charismatic Italian fellow named Roger Allegretto, and they married on Feb. 23, 1940. She was a homemaker busy raising two daughters but found time to teach many Italian immigrants to speak English - while she learned some Italian.
Mom's life took a major turn when Dad died suddenly in 1955 and in order to support our family she joined the workforce, first as a seamstress for Clark's Interior Furnishings and then as a Ward Clerk in the Operating Room at University Hospital for 4 years. She became a registered and certified E.E.G. Technologist working in the E.E.G. Lab at U.H. for 17 years and was very active in executive positions (local, provincial and national). In later years she worked part-time in different fields fully retiring in 1985.
She was a life long member of St. Thomas Wesley United Church helping with many activities, was a member of the Pastoral Care Committee and in later years, the Trustees Committee.
Mom, Grandma, G.G. was tremendously supportive of all our endeavors and accomplishments, be they big or small, and never forgot a special happening in our lives. We benefited from her seamstress, handcraft, cooking and gardening skills. She played ball, curled, bowled 5/10 pin, golfed and she cherished the many friendships made through these sports. She was always up for a game of cards or scrabble and was an avid reader. She traveled to places like Bermuda, London, Europe, Hawaii, the Caribbean as well as many states in the USA and most Canadian Provinces. Mom especially treasured times spent with family at home or at Waskesiu, Jackfish and Emma Lakes. She had many highlights in her life, one being the Blood/Undershute Family Reunion in Okotoks, Alberta last summer.
Mom was a hard working, gentle, caring person who faced the many challenges in her life with great determination and strength. She was a source of inspiration and we will miss her more than words can say. It was Mom's wish to be cremated and to have a private family gathering for the scattering of her ashes.
A Celebration of Mom's life will be held on Saturday, July 7th 2012 at 2:00 pm at St. Thomas Wesley United Church (Ave. H. and 20th Street) followed by a reception and fellowship time in the Lower Hall.
Mom loved gladiolus and grew many in our yard on 22nd Street. The family will have a gladiola arrangements at the service. (Gladiolus represent sincerity and strength of character) In lieu of other floral tributes, those wishing may make a donation to St. Thomas Wesley United Church Memorial Fund (808 20th St. West, S7M 0Y3 or to the Cancer Society. The family thanks the medical staff at St. Paul's Hospital, especially the Palliative Care Unit for their compassionate care of Mom. Condolences may be sent to mail@saskatoonfuneralhome.com.
