BOUGHTON, Glenn Rayner
Born in Saskatoon, SK, February 11, 1931, the youngest child of Dr. Harvey C. Boughton and Margaret Rayner Boughton. Glenn died peacefully on January 6, 2019, at The Victoria Hospice, Victoria, BC.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 65 years, Shirley Irene (Leard) and his older brother, John Cullis Boughton. He is survived by his children: David (Bobbi) of Grand Forks, BC; Richard (Mary Shariff) of Winnipeg, MB; Glenna (John Surgenor) of Kamloops, BC; Wendy of Victoria, BC; five grandchildren, Ted (Shannon), Bill (Charlsee), Matthew, Adam and Roan; a large extended family, and many, many friends.
Glenn was raised on the grounds of the Saskatoon Sanatorium where his father was Medical Superintendent. He graduated from King George Public School and Bedford Road Collegiate, and attended the University of Saskatchewan, where he received his BSc. in Agriculture (1954) and his MSc. Specializing in Plant Breeding and Genetics (1956).
Glenn was an active member of the Youth Group at St. Thomas Wesley United Church, where he met his future wife Shirley, and many of their life-long friends. After the birth of their first two children, he was transferred to Regina and worked out of the Agricultural Research Station. He spent 28 years overseeing the winter seed production nursery in Brawley, California, and was able to expose his children to exciting travels regularly through these times. He retired his career at Agriculture Canada in 1990, as the Head of the Experimental Farm at Indian Head, SK. He was an Honorary Life Member of the Canadian Seed Growers' Association.
Glenn joined the Masonic family in February, 1983. He served as Worshipful Master of Sherwood Lodge #214 in 1988-89, Grand Steward in 1991-92, and District Deputy Grand Master of District No. 2 in 1995-96. He affiliated with Assiniboia Lodge #49 in January 1998. He was honored to receive his 33rd degree in September, 2011.
Glenn and Shirley joined the Order of the Eastern 1984. The two were very active in Star. Glenn served as Worthy Patron, Regina Chapter #7 (1994) and of Corinthian Chapter #89 (2002), and Worthy Grand Patron of the Grand Chapter of Saskatchewan in 2003-04.
Glenn and Shirley shared a passion for travel; they visited India, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Japan, Great Britain, and made many road trips across North America in their retirement years, never tiring of seeing new places, visiting far-flung family and friends, and experiencing different cultures.
Glenn and Shirley moved from Regina to Victoria in late 2011 and found a wonderful home in the Wellesley Retirement Community. They enjoyed the mild climate of Victoria and spent lots of time exploring the city and visiting the ocean. As Shirley's health declined, Glenn became her care-giver. Her death in July of 2018, 11 days after their 65th wedding anniversary, was devastating to him.
Music was always a large part of Glenn's life; he spent over 40 years playing tuba in various bands in both Regina and Victoria. He attended the International Music Camp many times and was involved in several "Tuba Christmas" concerts. Glenn continued to play until October 2018, when his health began to decline. His retirement from music was sorrowful and he spoke of his musical career often in his last days.
