TURNER, Lillian Ruth.
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother, Lillian Ruth Turner (nee Johnston) on June 6, 2007 at Royal University Hospital, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
Lillian was born June 5, 1913 in Brock, Saskatchewan and lived her entire life in the province of Saskatchewan. A graduate of Bedford Road Collegiate, Saskatoon, and the University of Saskatchewan, she taught for a number of years in several rural schools until her marriage to William (Bill) Leslie Turner in 1941. Bill predeceased her in March 1977.
For a period of four years during the early 1940's, while her husband was on active service with the RCAF, Lillian was a member of the Saskatoon Public Library staff. She valued the learning process and continued her education at the U. of S., obtaining a B.Ed. at the age 58 and attending seniors' classes well into her 80's.
Surviving Lillian are two daughters, Donna Rinas of Prince Albert and Dr. Joan (Terry) Crockett of Fishers, Indiana, USA. Also surviving are six grandchildren: Sean (Kelly) Rinas (Sydney, Australia), Leah (Dave) Murray (Hepburn, SK), Cara (Justin) Stylianou (Cairns, Australia), and Joel (Lindsay) Rinas (Saskatoon, SK), and Tyler Crockett (New York, New York, USA) and Lisa Crocket (Muncie, Indiana, USA). Lillian had five great-grandchildren: Ayla and Lillian Murray and Nahanni, Cohen and Kaede Rinas. All were very precious to her heart.
Lillian was predeceased by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert Johnston, pioneers in the D'arcy, SK district, where they farmed for many years. She was also predeceased by two sisters, Rosetta Mathieson of Vancouver, BC and Hazel Mark of Winnipeg, MB.
The family would like to express a sincere thank you to all the wonderful staff at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon who took such great care of our wonderful Mom during her last few days with us. A special mention to Janet Vickers who visited with Mom from the 1st Baptist Church and was a dear friend and a great help to her. Thank you to Rev. Paul Matheson who officiated at the private service. Kelly Dahl, TD Canada Trust, was instrumental in assisting Mom to maintain her independent lifestyle and helped her in many ways above and beyond. Also, Mom's friends at the Milroy Apartments where she lived the past 19 years were very dear to her and she looked forward to the weekly Tuesday morning coffees and evening suppers they shared together.
All who know her loved her Lillian was a remarkable women, ahead of her time, who will never be forgotten and always missed by her family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, help us honor Lillian by contributing to the Canadian Children's Fund or to a charity of the donor's choice. A private family interment was held on June 6, 2007, according to Lillian's wishes. E-mail condolences to mail@saskatoonfuneralhome.com Arrangements have been entrusted to the SASKATOON FUNERAL HOME (244-5577)
