GRENKIE, Hazel Irene (nee Jensen) April 12, 1916 - September 13, 2005
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Hazel Irene Grenkie (nee Jensen) on Tuesday, September 13, 2005 at Stensrud Lodge in Saskatoon.
She leaves to mourn her loss her daughters, Lynda Wolf and Joyce (William) McCoy; her grandchildren, Eric and Christopher Wolf, Andrea and Darren McCoy; and her dear friends, Betty Thompson, Carol Taylor, Jean Humbert and their families. Hazel is also mourned by her many nieces, nephews and others in her extended family.
Hazel was born in Zealandia, Saskatchewan. She graduated from Bedford Road Collegiate and Saskatoon Normal School. Hazel taught at Glenhurst School near Bounty, Palo, and finally Avoca School in Kerrobert. She married Percy Grenkie in 1939. They farmed at Landis and then moved to Rosetown, where they farmed until their retirement. Hazel achieved high standards in all she did. She was an accomplished cook, seamstress and gardener as well as curler, square dancer and pianist. She was always a devoted mother and grandmother.
Beginning in 1970, Hazel studied Fine Arts at the University of Saskatchewan with Charles Ringnes (Printmaking) and Eli Bornstein (Structurist Relief) as well as with artists including Mina Forsyth, Stanley Day, Rita Cowley, Andrew Hudson, Donald McNamee and Bill Epp. From 1970-1983 her work appeared in shows at the Mendel Art Gallery and the University of Saskatchewan. In 1982, she was awarded an Individual Assistance Grant from the Saskatchewan Arts Board to produce a series of Photogravure/etchings in Viscosity Printing technique. During her career, Hazel was an art instructor, exhibition adjudicator and guest artist. She wrote "Guidelines for Printmaking " for the Saskatchewan Crafts Council. In 1990, her career was outlined in The Biographical Dictionary of Saskatchewan Artists.
Hazel was predeceased by her husband, Percy; her sisters, Margaret Jensen and Catherine Copeland; her brother, Christian Jensen; niece, Evelyn Jensen; and nephew, Wendell Jensen.
A Graveside Service will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 17 with Rev. Andrew Appledore officiating (please gather at the north entrance). A reception will follow at St. Paul's United Church in Sutherland (454 Egbert Avenue). In lieu of flowers, donations in Hazel's memory may be made to the CNIB (1705 McKercher Drive, Saskatoon, SK S7H 5N6). Arrangements entrusted to Kenneth J. Scheirich of Park Funeral Chapel, 244-2103.
