MORRIS, Ronald Evan 1956 - 2010
On Wednesday, October 6th, a strong and great man passed away. Ron was a leader and role model. He had numerous passions in his life, including his family, sports, and work.
First and foremost, his family: wife, Alanna (nee Yathon); sons Rylan, Brady, and Carson; father Ghomer; sister Evelle (Bob and Zak Lindsay), sisters-in-law Maureen (Wayne, Samuel, and Michael Johnson); Candice (Greg, Kaitlin, and Madison Rokosh); and Donalda (Jeff, Joshua, and Hannah Kocur); and mother-in-law Edythe Yathon; as well as a large extended family, including many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Ron made friends wherever he went, whether playing sports or working for the city. All of these friendships were very important to him. Ron enjoyed many sports over the years, winning awards, trophies and championships. He loved football, hockey, baseball, and basketball. He was a true leader.
His leadership role began in high school, where he helped the Bedford Road basketball team win the provincial championship in 1972 and 1974. He went on to play for the Saskatoon Hilltops as Quarterback, and helped lead them to the 1978 National Championship. This led to a try-out with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, and a year as quarterback with the U of S Huskies. He played Hockey locally for many years, winning championships and making many friendships along the way. In 1987 he was elected into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame as member of the 1978 Hilltops National Championship Team.
Ron worked for the City of Saskatoon for thirty-five years, including many years as a Roadways Inspector. He loved his job and the many friendships that developed over the years. Much of his passion is shown in his work on numerous projects across the city as it grew, including the River Landing.
Another of his passions was the outdoors. Over the past four years, he was building a cabin at Turtle Lake with the help of his sons. Unsurprisingly, it wasn't all work at the lake; he loved boating, sailing and kayaking.
Ron was predeceased by sister Janet, mother Esther Morris (nee Gabrielson), and father-in-law Ernest Yathon.
Ron was warm, witty, generous, helpful and fun-loving person. He was a compassionate and selfless father, husband, uncle, friend and teammate. He had an undeniable zest for life, and loved everything he did with his family and friends. We wish to thank everyone for all of the love and support shown to us throughout our journey. Because of our deep love for Ron, we choose to celebrate his life and accomplishments.
We invite family and friends to join us in a come-and-go celebration and remembrance at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 63, (corner of Spadina Cres W and 17th Street W) on Thursday October 14th, 1:00 to 4:00 pm. We ask all guests to dress casual and wear a sports jersey in honour of Ron. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the StarPhoenix Sporting Christmas Fund. Special thanks to Dr. Hoe Mark, Dr. Robert Parker, Scott Irwin, and the staff of 6100 at R. U. H hospital. Arrangements in care of David Polzen MOURNING GLORY FUNERAL SERVICES (978-5200).
