NOWOSAD, Michaelene Amelia (nee Hrycak)
Passed away on August 4, 2010, after a courageous battle with cancer, leaving behind her grieving husband Peter and son Orest.
Michaelene (Lee) was predeceased by her father Michael (1984), sister Ann (2008) and her husband Peter Luczka (2007), mother Angela (2010), and brother-in-law Roman Semenchuk (2003).
Lee, the eldest, born on the family farm west of Alvena on November 20, 1927, leaves fond memories with her surviving siblings Stephanie (Ed Sakundiak), Natalie (Norman McLeod), and Eugene Hrycak. Lee loved her extended family. The family historian, having researched the Hrycak family tree with a cousin, she kept close ties with relatives in Canada, the USA and Ukraine.
Lee was always industrious whether it was at home helping with the home or family grocery stores in Alvena or Saskatoon. As a young woman, following school in Alvena and while and after attending Bedford Road Collegiate, Lee worked in various places such as Shelley Western and the OK Economy. She learned stenography at the Saskatoon Business College and worked with a couple of insurance companies, speaking fondly of her time at Sunlife.
After seven years of courtship Lee wed Peter on October 7, 1961. Through their years together they travelled the world, though she always preferred the wide open prairie spaces of Saskatchewan and the many car rides she did right to the end of her life.
Lee was active in her community including as a young woman in the life of St George's Ukrainian Greek Catholic Cathedral, participating in many church functions, the theatre and choir and assisting the Bishop. She was President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (Saskatoon Women's Branch) and League for the Liberation of Ukraine, involved in their executive committees at the provincial and national levels, and a member of the League of Ukrainian Women in Canada.
Lee loved her garden, was a very good seamstress, an excellent cook with the meanest baked Alaska around, and prepared many a korovai Ukrainian wedding breads for family and friends. She was a clear and open-minded, principled woman of strong conviction. She and Peter believed in the need to always learn and cherish those who one met, be honest with oneself and others, and strong in the Christian faith. She gave her only son Orest every opportunity to spread his wings helping him by sending care parcels throughout the world by bus, train, ship and plane.
