SAWA, Sylvester Orest February 9, 1934 - June 15, 2010
With deep sadness we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather.
Syl was born in Goodeve, Saskatchewan on February 9, 1934. He attended elementary school in Regina and Campion College for grade 9, Bedford Road Collegiate in Saskatoon, and graduated from Nutana Collegiate in 1952. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1955. He attended the University of Toronto and obtained a Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1959.
Syl was married to Arlene Margaret Currie of Rosetown in 1958 together they had four loving children, Sandra (Cliff Lesko), Michael (Kathy Burgess), Nancy (Tim Tait) and Patrick (Pam Nickell). Syl and Arlene were blessed with fourteen grandchildren, Kristin, Jill, and Brett Lesko; Kori, Stacey, Matthew, and Nicole Sawa; Rebecca, Kimberly and Jonathon Tait; Alyssa, Kyla, Jarred and Miranda Sawa. Syl is survived by his two sisters, Eleanor Galon and Josephine Nook.
Syl practiced Dentistry until he retired in 1988. Syl was a past president of the Saskatoon and District Dental Society and had been a Clinical Lecturer in Children's Dentistry at the University of Saskatchewan. Syl was a charter member and past president of the Saskatchewan Chapter of the Canadian Society of Dentistry for Children. He had also been a member of the Canadian Chapter of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis. Syl had been a member of the Knights of Columbus and Chapter Member of the Darcy Magee Council 5104. He had been a past Youth Chairman and was on the committee to secure the site and buildings for the Knights of Columbus Youth Camp at Blackstrap Lake. He was co-chairman of the Knights of Columbus Bantam Hockey tournament held for many years in Saskatoon. Syl had been a Kinsman member in Rosetown where he practiced dentistry for a short time.
Syl was an avid sports enthusiast and coached minor hockey and baseball at many levels. In his retirement Syl spent a good part of the winter in Scottsdale, Az and his summers at their cabin at Blackstrap Lake.
Prayers will be held on Thursday, June 17, 7:00 P.M. at Saint Philip Neri Parish. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, June 18 at 2:00 P.M. at Holy Spirit Parish.
