EVANS, Carmen Sybil 1912 - 2010
Carmen Evans was born June 5, 1912 at Woodstock, Ontario. She died in Duncan, BC on January 16, 2010.
She was predeceased by her husband, Russell in 1975 and is survived by her two sons, Robert Evans (Wendy) St. Thomas, ON, William Evans, Montreal; her daughter, Leslie Bundon (Jack) Duncan, BC and eight grandchildren.
Carmen's family moved to Saskatchewan when she was a young girl. She attended Bedford Road Collegiate and the Saskatoon Business College. As a young woman she raced with the Saskatoon Speed Skating Club. In 1940 she married Russell Evans. They moved to City Park neighborhood and raised their children. During these years Carmen kept busy with many hobbies. She was an expert seamstress who enjoyed all types of handwork from sewing clothes for her family to making hats and hooking rugs. She took a course in woodworking and created several pieces of furniture.
A devoted parishioner at St. John's Cathedral for over forty years, Carmen took on many projects and served on numerous committees. One project was to sew choir gowns and surplices for all the choristers; another was the creation of a beautiful quilt to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the Anglican diocese.
In later years Carmen joined the Saskatoon Duplicate Bridge Club, became an accomplished bridge player and made many friends. She enjoyed several trips to tournaments with her bridge pals; she was determined to become a Life Master. In 2001, Carmen moved to Duncan where she has lived for the last nine years.
She is lovingly remembered by her nieces and nephews as their favorite Aunt. Her home and her heart were always open to them. Carmen was a generous and gracious hostess who loved to entertain. Kind and sweet, Carmen had a positive and optimistic attitude toward life. Difficulties were faced with faith and calm determination. She will be dearly missed. If we had to define her life in a phrase: She Loved God and Neighbor.
The family wishes to thank all those who have been involved in Mom's care over the last few years: the caring staffs of Cowichan Lodge and Sunridge Place in Duncan, St. Ann's Garden Club at Providence Farm and Dr. Grimes. There will be no funeral at this time but a memorial service will be held for Carmen this summer in Saskatoon. Condolences may be sent to remembering.canada.com . In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
