READ, DOROTHY ARLENE (nee McConnell) June 11, 1931 - February 7, 2009
It is with great sadness that the family of Dorothy Read announce her passing on February 7, 2009 in Edmonton, AB.
Dorothy was born in Elstow, SK and spent her entire life in Saskatoon attending Westmount School and Bedford Road Collegiate. Having learned the meaning of hard work at a very early age she spent many years in the service industry working mainly in downtown Saskatoon at Kresge's, The Saskatoon Club and the Canada Building, where she and her husband, Jim operated the lunch counter and cigar stand. They later owned and operated the 7th Avenue Confectionery which was followed by many years spent at the Hub City Curling Rink operating the lunch counter and banquet services.
People often speak of her wonderful baking and her pies and tarts were always in great demand. Dorothy's home was always open for a family gathering, a game of cards, visiting neighbors, a garage sale and she loved all the times spent at the family cabin at Aquadeo Beach. Following retirement and the untimely death of her husband, Jim, Dorothy was very lucky to meet the second love of her life, Lorne Kershaw. Together they enjoyed many years at Waskesui, travelling and spending time with both of their families.
Dorothy is survived by daughter, Patti (Ross) Weise and son, Ken (Debbie) Read; grandchildren, Clayton and Dustin Read and Kendall Weise (Dave) and Ryan Weise (Erlene); and one great-grandson, Elijah Weise. Dorothy is also survived by her sister, Gertrude Mackowecky; brother-in-law, Bob (Joyce) Read; sister-in-law, Marlene (Arnie) Berg; along with many nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Clarence and Fanny McConnell; husband, Jim; brother, Orv and wife, Mae; sister, Lorraine Rochelle and Lorne Kershaw.
There will be a graveside Memorial Service to be held at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens on Thursday, March 19 at 2:00 p.m. Donations may be made in Dorothy's memory to the Saskatoon City Hospital Foundation. Arrangements are in care of Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, 477-4400.
