MEWDELL, KATHLEEN May 24, 1916 - December 10, 2008
Kay, or Nana as she was affectionately called by her grandchildren, was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She passed away on December 10, 2008 at Royal University Hospital surrounded by family.
She is survived by her children, Bonnie (Greg), Christie, Art Jr. and Meg (Doug); her grandchildren, Alex, Kevin, Carolene, Carmen, Collin, Michael; and her great-grandchild, Cheda; as well as family pets, Sandy and Lucie. She was predeceased by her husband, Art and her siblings, Jean, Margaret, David, Tom, Dick, Harry, Lawrence, Al, Ted, Rene and pet Pogo.
Mom's family immigrated from Ireland. She was the youngest sibling and was born in North Battleford, SK and raised in Ruddell, SK. She moved to Saskatoon and attended Bedford Road Collegiate to complete her grade 12. Mom 's caring nature lead her to become a nurse and she ventured off to St. Joseph's hospital in Victoria for training. After graduating she worked at the General Hospital in Vancouver then later in private practice. When World War II broke out she was working at Shaughesny Military Hospital in Vancouver where she met her husband to be, Art. She saved his life in the nick of time from a mismatched blood transfusion. They were married in Winnipeg and soon after had three children. They then moved to Regina and completed the family with a fourth child. In 1958 they moved to Saskatoon and mom started working at the DVA hospital as a nurse and in later years as the director.
Mom's greatest joy in life was to be with her family and Christmas afforded an opportunity for the entire family to come together every year. Mom always enjoyed a cup of tea and playing what she referred to as kitchen table bridge. Mom was a fantastic baker and kept all her kids and grand kids stocked up with loads of cookies, squares and granola. None surpassed Mom's pie making ability. She took golf up after retiring and became a member of the Wildwood Nine Holers.
Mom had a passion for politics. A Federal election, a leadership convention, or any political debate on CBC television was better than any hockey night in Canada. Mom had a lot of common sense and she was a great cheerleader for the underdog. She had a great mathematical mind and was a progressive thinker on politics and social issues. Kay/Nana was deeply loved by her family and will be greatly missed.
We would like to thank Dr. Kelly, Dr. Hunter and Dr. Al Nashmi for their expertise on mom's condition and the nurses and staff of 6300 for their wonderful care and compassion. We would also like to thank mom's family doctor, Dr. D. Jubin for her continued excellent care and respect for mom over the years. A private celebration of Kay/ Nana's life will be take place Wednesday December 24, 2008. Arrangements are entrusted to Martens Warman Funeral Home (934-4888). 1302709
