Clara Van Nes
1914-09-22 2008-02-24
Van Nes, Clara Hazel (nee Peters).
Clara van Nes of Bonnyville, AB, and formerly of Saskatoon and Hepburn, SK, passed peacefully into her heavenly reward on Sunday, February 24, 2008 at the age of 93 years, five months and two days.
She was born to Aron F. and Annie Peters of Hepburn, SK on September 22, 1914, and was the oldest of five children. Clara was educated at the Hepburn Public School through Grade 11. Because she was the only Grade 12 student in Hepburn at the time, she completed her high school at Bedford Road Collegiate in Saskatoon during the winter of 1931-1932. This meant boarding with a family close to the school and coming home infrequently. She was a good student, excelling in history, geography and math.
On June 14, 1936, after a seven year courtship, Clara married Anton van Nes of Hepburn. Together they raised a family of four children as well as working side by side in the Hepburn Trading Company General Store.
Clara is remembered as a person of simple wants and needs and as someone with a positive attitude. Seldom, if ever, was she heard to complain about her lot in life. In 1992, Anton and Clara moved to Saskatoon and took up residence in the Shepherd Apartments. There they made many good friends and enjoyed an active social life with fellow residents.
Clara was predeceased by her parents, Aron F. and Annie Peters; her husband, Anton; her son, Dale; her brother, Lawrence; and her sisters, Evelyn Friesen and Ruth Wiebe. Left to remember her love, generosity, and positive spirit are her brother, Kenneth (Norma) Peters; daughter-in-law, Myrtle van Nes; son, Reginald van Nes; daughter, Patricia (Gilbert) Shantz; son, Maurice (Pat) van Nes; eight grandchildren and their spouses; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The Celebration of Clara's Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Hepburn Mennonite Brethren Church, Hepburn, SK on Saturday, March 1, 2008. Interment will follow in the Hepburn Mennonite Brethren Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gideons for placement of Bibles in memory of Clara van Nes. Arrangements in care of DALMENY FUNERAL HOME. 254-2022
