BACON, Lawrence "Shorty"
On Friday September 7th, 2012 Lawrence "Shorty" Bacon peacefully joined the angels with family by his side. He will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by all those who knew him throughout the full 99 years he lived.
Shorty was born in Foam Lake to William and Mary Bacon on May 10th 1913. He was the 6th of 9 children. He married Dorothy in 1939 and they raised two children, Carole and Ron in Saskatoon. Shorty proudly served overseas in the Air Force in WWII. After the war, he worked for MacDonald's Consolidated and then Saskatoon City Transit for 30 years retiring in 1978. In retirement, he and Dorothy travelled together and wintered in Yuma Arizona and Parksville, BC before Dorothy's passing in 1990.
Shorty grew up in Saskatoon attending King George, Bedford Road and Tech. He excelled athletically playing basketball, soccer, baseball, rugby, and hockey. Throughout his life Shorty stayed active. In his 90's he still bowled and golfed daily with his buddies at Holiday Park. Shorty was also good with his hands building his house in Montgomery Place in 1954 and the cabin at Pike Lake a year later.
Shorty was always involved in the Anglican Church. He would light the boiler at St. Marks after a shift at work, participate in Sunday services, serve on the Board, drive the ladies to church and home, and sang in the choir at St. George's. As a proud veteran, Shorty regularly attended Remembrance Day services, was a member of the Legion, and enjoyed spending time with other Veterans at Happy Hour at Sherbrooke.
Shorty loved spending time with his family. Summer at Pike Lake or Buffalo Pound, Sunday dinners, family vacations, fishing, hunting, golfing and lunches out allowed him to share his time, expertise, and especially his sense of humor with those he loved.
Shorty joins in eternal peace his wife Dorothy; parents William and Mary; siblings Florence, Bill, Charlie, Lou, Anne, Ken, Vince, Don; and son-in-law Howard Parchman. Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life are Shorty's children Carole Parchman and Ron (Betty) Bacon; grandchildren Mike Bacon, Troy (Whitney) Parchman, Paula Bacon, Kelly (Tony) Froehlich, Ryan (Rhonda Shishkin) Parchman; great grandchildren Ian and Leanne Thorsell, Chloe and Kendra Froehlich, Evan Parchman and many more family and friends.
The family would like to thank the staff at Sherbrooke Veterans Village and St. Ann's Senior Citizens Village for their compassionate care. A Memorial Service will be held at St. George's Anglican Church (624 Avenue I South) on Thursday, September 13, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. with The Rev. Ann Marie Nicklin officiating.
