1932-04-20 2012-07-06
DUNLAP, Damaris (Demi)
Our amazing Mom and Grandma passed away on July 6, 2012.
Grateful for her life is her loving family: Charlie (Ann), Bob (Donna) and Meredith; her grandchildren Jessica (Ryan), Alexandra, Samantha, Roberta, Maddie and David; predeceased by her son-in- law Steve.
Demi was born in Saskatoon April 20, 1932 and attended Mayfair, Bedford Road and then Normal School. Demi's twin passions were education and libraries. She was a highly-regarded teacher, both at the elementary and university levels, as well as being an exceptional and respected administrator. She was a pioneer in education, becoming the second female principal in Saskatoon. Schools under her leadership included: King George, Sutherland, Pleasant Hill, Haultain, Holliston, Caswell and John Lake.
Demi initiated and implemented cutting-edge educational concepts such as co- operative education, open-area classrooms and innovative school libraries. When Demi was the principal, Sutherland was named one of the top schools in Canada. It is easy to understand why she was honored in 1977 as an Administrator of the Year. Demi was an elected member to the executive of the Saskatchewan Teachers Federation (1976-1984) and was honored with a lifetime membership.
Demi found her love of travel in the summer of 1974 when she volunteered with the CTF's Project Overseas, mentoring other teachers in Thailand. Since that time, Demi travelled to every continent, relishing every opportunity to meet new people and experience what other cultures could teach her. Demi loved to learn and earned her B.A., B.Ed. and M. Ed. while working fulltime, raising her family and continuing her committee work.
Demi was actively committed to her community and was on the board or chair of numerous organizations: member of the Saskatoon Police Commission, the University of Saskatchewan Senate, the national YWCA, UNICEF, and the Saskatoon Co-op. In 1975, Demi was honored as An Outstanding Woman of the Year.
After her retirement, Demi moved to Surrey, B.C., continuing to offer her experience and expertise to the Victim's Liaison of the RCMP, the Surrey Museum Advisory, the B.C. chapter of Unifem (UNICEF) and the Surrey Public Library. This was also when she accomplished a long-held dream of, at age 74, earning her Ph.D. In 2008, Demi moved to Burlington, ON, to be closer to her children and grandchildren.
Demi was an intelligent, articulate and creative person with enormous energy and drive, as well as a terrific sense of humor. In her latter years, she reluctantly accepted the losses and indignities of old age with grace and courage.
We are very grateful to the wonderful and supportive staff at Sunrise Senior Living in Burlington for their kind and compassionate care. Condolences can be sent to Demi Dunlap #112-5401 Lakeshore Rd. Burlington, ON L7L 6S5.
