GALLAGHER, VERA 1935 - 2011
It is with profound sadness the family announces the passing of Vera Gallagher (nee Allan) on April 16th, 2011 at St. Paul's Hospital, Palliative Care Unit after a difficult but courageous battle with cancer.
Vera will be missed by her loving husband of 56 years, Joseph (Joe); and her children Dennis, Brian (Debbie) and Wendy (Art Sekulich); her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Vera was born in Regina on January 4, 1935 and at a young age moved to Saskatoon where she attended school at Caswell Elementary and Bedford Road Collegiate. When Vera was 15 her family moved to BC, Vera chose to stay in Saskatoon. She met the love of her life, Joe, at the softball diamond on August 7, 1952 and they were married on September 25, 1954. They have seldom been apart since. Together they raised their three children in Saskatoon where both Vera and Joe proudly supported them and her grandchildren through many sporting and school activities.
Vera was a very hard worker and had many jobs from a very early age, her work ethic was beyond approach. Some of the highlights of her working career included Hazen-Twist, Custom Cleaners (14 years) and were also the owner/operators of Holiday Park Confectionary. In 1981 Vera returned to school and attended the University of Saskatchewan where she obtained her Bachelors of Education. Her first teaching job was at One Arrow School, followed by Pleasant Hill and she ended her career as the Community School Coordinator with St. Mary's Community School.
Vera was also an advocate for many charity's and organizations, she served on the Board of Directors at the Interval House, involved for many years with SASA, and was the President at the Fairhaven Senior Centre to just name a few.
The family would like to send a sincere thank you to the staff of the Palliative Care Unit at St. Paul's Hospital for helping make Vera's last week one of comfort and dignity. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to one of Vera's favorite initiatives, the St. Mary's Community School (Lunch Program) or Interval House. The family invite friends to join in the celebration of Vera's Life at Saskatoon Funeral Home, 338 4 Ave N, Saskatoon at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday April 19th, 2011. Condolences may be sent to mail@saskatoonfuneralhome.com Arrangements have been entrusted to Saskatoon Funeral Home.
