HUTCHINSON, Edna (née French)
Edna passed away peacefully on Monday, October 5, 2015 at Extendicare in Saskatoon.
She was born July 15, 1911 to Walter and Mary Janet (Jessie) French on their homestead in the Laura and Donovan School districts. There were 9 children in the family with 2 dying in infancy. The family enjoyed music, dancing, curling, baseball and softball. Edna attended Bedford Road Collegiate for one year in 1926 and competed in High Jump and Sprinting. Due to the economic situation of the times, she went back home to work on the farm. She did domestic work around the Donavon area for a few years and then returned to Saskatoon.
She worked at the Eaton's lunch counter where she met Fred Hutchinson. They went together for a few years and married in 1942. They were stationed in Vernon, B.C. until Fred was shipped overseas. She returned to Saskatoon awaiting the end of the war. Fred returned after being wounded in France in 1944. Their marriage continued with the birth of a son, Richard in 1946 and a daughter, Carol in 1949. Fred passed away in 1972 and Edna continued to live in the house on 6th Street for 60 years.
Edna was a wonderful wife and mother. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and yardwork. She was a volunteer with the Ladies Auxiliary at both the Western Development Museum and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 63. Mom enjoyed cooking for both Richard and Carol's friends.
Edna is survived by her daughter Carol, son Richard (Trudy) and their children Cody (Dream, Emile, Sheridon); Cam (Kathy) and their children Bailey and Brody; Walter; Ryan (Skylar, Owen); sister-in- law Alice French; Freda Kimpton; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband Fred, her parents and her 8 brothers and sisters.
Thanks to Extendicare for their excellent care and supportive staff. In lieu of flowers, donations in Edna's memory may be made to a charity of your choice. A Memorial Service for Edna will be held Friday, October 9, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Hillcrest Funeral Home (east on 8th St, first right past Briargate Rd). Arrangements entrusted to Phil Fredette.
