WRIGHT, Philip John November 25, 1942 – December 29, 2013
It is with great sadness that the family of Philip John Wright announces his passing on Sunday, December 29, 2013. His death occurred peacefully at home in Kaleden, British Columbia where, along with his loving wife, he had happily been enjoying retirement for the past two years.
Phil was predeceased by his parents, Philip Robert Harris Wright and Helen Campbell Wright, and his uncles Donald Wright and Lester Wright. His loss will be mourned by those who survive him, his wife of 43 years, Elaine, son Jason (Gwen), grandson Andy, sisters Brenda Remus (Brian) and Merri-Ellen Wright (Neil Fisher), his aunt Bette Dawson along with many cousins and friends.
Phil was born in 1942 in Regina, but spent much of his early life living with his mother's family in Salvador, Saskatchewan while his father served overseas during World War II. At the end of the war Phil's family moved to Saskatoon where Phil continued to live until his recent retirement.
Phil received his education at Caswell School, Zion Academy and Bedford Road Collegiate. He then attended the University of Saskatchewan where he obtained a Bachelor of Commerce degree. With his education completed, Phil turned his full time attention to the family business, Houghton Boston Printers and Lithographers, the company acquired by his father in 1949 when it was but a one person operation with only a single hand press. Phil took over stewardship of the business when his father retired in 1975 and transformed the company into the state of the art printing plant that it has now become. Phil took pride in his profession, and in the many people who worked along side him over the years.
Phil was always a lover of the printed word, whether it was in the form of books, newspapers or magazines. He understood and appreciated the power of printing and publishing and the impact that it could have on so many people. Like his father before him, he will be laid to rest with his line gauge in his hand, the tool of his trade. Phil will always be remembered for his hard work, dedication, compassion and thoughtful wisdom. He will be missed by the many valued people with whom he worked. Most of all he will be missed by his loving family who will cherish his memory and the man he was.
A celebration of Phil's life will be held at the Chapel at Saskatoon Funeral Home on Friday, January 10, 2014 at 1:00 pm with interment to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation (279 - 3rd Ave N., S7K 2H8) or the Canadian Diabetes Association (104-2301 Ave C N, S7L 5X5). Email condolences may be sent to mail@saskatoonfuneralhome.com. Arrangements entrusted to Saskatoon Funeral Home (306-244-5577)
