SMITH, HARVEY STEPHEN 1931 - 2004
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Harvey Stephen Smith on August the fourth 2004 in White Rock, BC. He was 72 years old and died after a long struggle with emphysema.

He was the greatly loved husband of Patricia, the father of Susan (Ross), Robert (Karla) and Richard; and stepfather of Myles (Peggy) and Martin (Catherine) Sanderson. Harvey was also the much loved grandpa of Jennifer, Andrew, Alexander, James and Sara (Sanderson) and Sydney (Smith). He is also survived by a sister Marguerite (Peter Neelands) and brother Derek (Jane) Smith and their families.

Harvey was born August 12, 1931 in Saskatoon to Stephen and Margaret Smith. He attended Bedford Road Collegiate where he excelled and developed a love of all sports. He won the Star Phoenix Road Race in 1949 and set a number of provincial track and field records. In his teens Harvey was involved in the operation of the family owned Clinton Lodge on University Drive as well as the Red Robin Cafe on Broadway Avenue. During the 1950's and early 1960's, Saskatoon was growing rapidly and Harvey expanded his operations into Harvey's Fine Foods and Harvey S. Smith Catering (Fondly remembered as "Harvey's Cumberland House"). He also owned and operated several A&W Franchises. He was a man of creative ideas and inspired many new ventures and many people.

Harvey had great entrepreneurial spirit and was instrumental in many developments in Saskatoon, including the Carlton Towers on 5th Avenue North. Harvey showed great leadership throughout his business career. He was president of the Nutana Kiwanis Club as well as the youngest ever national president of the Canadian Restaurant Association in 1964. In the 1970's Harvey served as president of the Hotels Association of Saskatchewan, due to his ownership of the Albany Hotel and management of the Travelodge Motor Hotel in Saskatoon.

In the 1980's he was instrumental in the development of the Bingo industry by starting and expanding Confederation Bingo. Harvey and Patricia retired to White Rock in 1998, he greatly enjoyed life by the ocean. Throughout his life Harvey travelled extensively, had many varied interests, including his art and coin collections, and particularly enjoyed his sailboat and his many trips through the Caribbean. Harvey was known as a man of great wit and personality who was loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
